Key changes

If passed, Bill 1 will:
legally define essential infrastructure to include public and private infrastructure such as:
pipelines and related infrastructure
oil and gas production and refinery sites
utilities (electric, gas, and water)
telecommunication lines, towers, and equipment
highways
railways
mines
allow regulations to expand the definition of essential infrastructure in the future if necessary
create offences for:
wilfully entering any essential infrastructure
wilfully destroying or damaging essential infrastructure
wilfully obstructing, interrupting or interfering with the construction, maintenance, use or operation of any essential infrastructure
gaining entry to any essential infrastructure under false pretenses
an individual or corporation to aid, counsel or direct the commission of an offence
introduce penalties similar to the Trespass to Premises Act and the Petty Trespass Act:
up to $10,000 for a first offence
up to $25,000 for subsequent offences, as well as possible prison time of up to 6 months
up to $200,000 for corporations that help or direct trespassers

How this Affects Indigenous People

This bill directly impacts the Indigenous people of Wet’suwet’en.
The bill will allow Canada to go ahead with the oil pipeline they want to build.
It will allow the arrest of indigenous people even if they go anywhere near the pipeline (Keep in mind this pipeline is being built on THEIR land- the wet’suwet’en land) They can arrested for upto six months and have to pay a fine of $25000!!
Basically it’s arresting indigenous people for being on their own land.
This takes away their right to protest, fish , hunt and even gather on their OWN land.
Indigenous people have the highest level of poverty in Canada, therefore they cannot pay the fine and will have to oblige with this bill if passed.
The leuitenant governor has the authority to deem ANY LOCATION a place of ‘essential infrastructure’ which allows the arrest of indigenous people. (even their own home)
Not only will indigenous people not be able to protest for their land anymore but so will all residents in alberta.

How this Act Affects Protestors

This act will not allow protestors to to protest on highways which means we won’t be able to protest on roads, streets or sidewalks. Therefore, totally blocking protestors from protesting itself.
The Leuitenant Governor has the authority to deem a place ‘essential infrastructure’ which leads to the arrest of everyone who is on that land.
This Act endangers protestors and strips away their human right to speak out against the government.
Introduces penalties similar to the Trespass to Premises Act and the Petty Trespass Act:
up to $10,000 for a first offence
up to $25,000 for subsequent offences, as well as possible prison time of up to 6 months
up to $200,000 for corporations that help or direct trespassers

Bottom Line:

Canadian government is making it illegal for the indigenous people of Alberta to stand on their own land, the land we stole from them.
Protesters will be arrested if they ever protest near big corporations sites, highways etc in Alberta- they're trying to stop us from enacting change. We need to take action to stop this act from getting approval.
