Fridays For Future Africa stands in solidarity with the people of Sudan and calls on the international environmental movement to help raise the alarm on the catastrophic war in Sudan!!
On April 15, 2023, fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), plunging the country into an unprecedented catastrophe. Since the war began two years ago, the people of Sudan have experienced widespread, horrific human rights abuses and a humanitarian crisis at an unimaginable scale.
Civilians have experienced endless horrors: arson, looting, bombing, sexual violence, mass killings, and starvation used as a weapon of war. An estimated 150 thousand people have been killed and warring parties have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity. The RSF is also brutally targeting the Masalit and other African ethnic groups in Darfur, reigniting the horrors of the Darfur genocide in the early 2000s.
As a result of the war, Sudan is experiencing the largest displacement crisis, the largest children’s crisis, and the largest hunger crisis in the world, with over 30 million people in urgent need of humanitarian aid. This amounts to the largest humanitarian crisis ever recorded.
Despite the scale of the crisis and two years of devastation, Sudan has been met with little attention from world leaders, news outlets, the general public, and shamefully, much of the international environmental movement.
Environmental justice cannot be achieved in a world that looks away from the mass suffering, human rights violations, and environmental destruction happening in Sudan.
We call on environmental organizations and activists to speak up about the war in Sudan and demand urgent action to stop the war!
