A set of holiday guidelines we've agreed upon as a family.
Amount of gifts
Remember that it can get overwhelming. Stay under 10 per person. Less is more.
Timeline
A month before
Take a day off and do Target trip. Buying small and medium gifts off the shelf can be cheaper and less stressful than purely online shopping.
A week before
Take a vacation day to do wrapping and purchase stocking stuffers and last minute gifts.
Christmas Eve
One to one gift exchange between the nuclear family. We also open gifts from extended family that have mailed them in advance. Open gifts before dinner to allow more play time.
Christmas Morning
Open stockings first. All can be opened simultaneously.
Eat breakfast between stockings and first gift opening.
Rotate gift opening among everyone, one at a time (so we can enjoy their reactions). It's ok to open and play with a toy for a few minutes, but you have to stay in the room, and we won't open messy toys or electronics. When the playing dies down we move on to the next gift round.
A day or two after Christmas
Revisit these guidelines and make edits as needed.
