v19-Peppers2
2/28/2021
70-90F
.25
Seeds sprout in 10-15 days at 70F. Sprinkle 5-10 seeds in a cup of vermiculite approx 7 weeks before the last spring frost and cover with 1/4 in more vermiculite. Keep warm until sprouted; move to full sunlight as soon as first shoots appear, then pot up in seedling trays as soon as plants are large enough. Use a sterile seedling mix and keep uniformly moist. Germination may be slow and erratic. Provide the seedlings with plenty of light to produce strong, high-yielding, mature plants. Need warm soil; don’t transplant until 2 weeks after last frost. Once seedlings have at least 3 sets of true leaves, expose them to 50F nighttime and 70F day temps. To increase early flower productions transplant outdoors once soil temperatures reach 65F.

Direct sow when soil temperatures reach at least 50F. Peas may be sown without tilling by scratching out a furrow and covering the seed shallowly. Coat seeds with inoculant to promote healthy, vigorous plants. Mix presoaked seeds with legume inoculant powder for an added boost, then plant 1 in deep about 5 weeks before last frost. Water and cover with plastic-covered tunnel.

3/7/2021
70-90F
.25”
Start indoors Feb-April. Optimal soil germination temp 60-85F. Sprinkle 5 or so of each variety you want to grow in cups filled with vermiculite 6 weeks before last spring frost. Just barely cover with vermiculite and water. Move to full sunlight as soon as the first shoots appear, then pot up in seedling trays or individual pots when the first set of true leaves have emerged (usually 1-3 weeks). Keep a careful watch over the plants, esp after transplanting them into seedling trays, because any check or stoppage of the growth will affect the ultimate bearing capacity of the plant. Harden off transplants for 1-2 weeks, and plant outside on or after your front-free date. Plant one vine-type plant per square foot. Water and cover with a plastic-covered wire cage for protection from the cold and wind. Transplant after frost danger has passed. Avoid using fresh manure as it causes lush foliage with few ripe fruits. Instead use generous amounts of compost or well-rotted manure to boost plant vigor, and crushed eggshells or gypsum at the bottom of each hole for calcium.

Keep warm until sprouted; move to full sunlight as soon as first shoots appear, then pot up in seedling trays as soon as plants are large enough (usually 1-3 weeks). Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Seeds germinate quickly. Transplant after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Wait to transplant until the weather is starting to feel like summer. Sow into sterile seedling mix and lightly cover the seed with fine vermiculite. Strong light is necessary to keep the seedlings from getting leggy. Fertilize lightly and grow at 62-65F until planting outside.

Start up to 10-12 seeds in a 4-6 in pot. Place in a warm location and keep moist. Seeds sprout in 5 days at 70F. Sprinkle about 20 seeds of each variety into cups filled with vermiculite 8-12 weeks before last spring frost. Keep warm (70F) until sprouted; move to full sunlight as soon as first shoots appear, then pot up in seedling trays as soon as plants are large enough (usually 1-3 weeks). At 4 weeks before the last spring frost, shake most of the vermiculite from young plants and gather them together in small bunches. With scissors, cut off both the tops and the roots so the plant is balanced with about 2” of each. Make a hole at each space in your planting square with a pencil and slip in a plant, firm the soil, and water. If you cannot translplant outside before the tops reach 5”, then cut back the tops to 3”.
