Bought seeds today. The compost is moving slower than I’d hoped, but there are plenty of worms, which is heartening. I guess it’s just cold and damp; not much to be done about that! Still feeling pretty mystified by a lot of the garden terminology: cloches and row covers and bone meal and so on. It feels like a lot!

I have a plan for what to plant in each veggie plot! No lettuces this year, since we forget to eat them. 24 sq feet sounds like SO much in the planning phase. And I ordered supplies for an irrigation system from Gardener’s Supply.
The garlic
@v12-Garlic
is starting to poke up through my mulch-and-netting fortification. I’m hoping my plan for row cover and netting and irrigation will deter the squirrels, and I won’t have to get a hawk whistle and terrorize the neighborhood.

Started 4 broccoli seeds today (two more than I need for
@w1-Broccoli
and
@v3-Broccoli
). Took a few minutes to gather my supplies, but then it was simple. So far I’m using half-and-half coco coir and vermiculite — we’ll see how that goes!

So many mystery shoots coming up! New soil thermometer says the raised bed is at about 43F. The back section near the fence is more like 40F. And the compost is a balmy 55F. Got the second batch of onion seeds started, so now the broccoli, 6 parsley, and 2 cups of onion seeds are chilling in the dining room while I try to figure out exactly how much water they need and watch the soil anxiously.

The broccoli and onion seeds are just starting to sprout!

Got the shed cleaned out yesterday. Compost is running a little cold, but now I have burlap to cover it, and have incorporated coffee chaff from Conor. All 4 broccoli shoots are looking strong, but the baby onions are looking a little bedraggled; it’s possible I under-watered them for a day or two. The parsley is still a mystery, but I think that’s expected. I pulled up whatever was coming up in the vegetable bed (lillies, maybe), either volunteers or planted by squirrels. They were impressively deep — sometimes 8-10” — and I didn’t always succeed at getting the bulb/rhizome. Strongly suspect my garlic square will be flanked by a few flowers! Otherwise, the soil in that bed is still looking great.

Started the chives — about 40 seeds, in hopes that I’ll get 30 or so plants. And another 6 squares of parsley, this time with a bit of vermiculite on top. I think the burlap sacks are helping the compost — it’s up to 53F or so. The raised beds are still down around 40-45F.

High of 45F today, but the compost is at nearly 60! The birds are making all kinds of good noise and the plants are busting up all over — of course, I don’t know what most of them are!
Weeded the bare vegetable bed.
Tidied the far-front bed where the
@Periwinkle
is just starting to bloom.
The first few daffodils (or narcissus?) are coming up, too. Tiny little drooping yellow blossoms.
Starting pruning back the
@Grape (seedless)
in the side yard — what a tangle. I sure hope I’m not messing anything up!
Got some mulch on the front lawn, hoping it’ll fill in some of the bald/low patches.
Pulled up the tangle of business in the herb beds; I’ll still need to till it in and add some Mel’s Mix before planting, but it’s a start.

🌱Update on seedlings 🌱

I was keeping them on the windowsill for a bit, but they got waaaaay too leggy and fell over, especially after I left town for a few days.
They’ve recovered a bit since I got the grow light set up on the rolling cart, though then I put the light too low. I think the pure vermiculite — and maybe even coir+vermiculite — are a little low on nutrients. I either need to use a little compost or start fertilizing when they germinate.
Just made up a mix with some compost (and pumice at the bottom) to salvage the leggiest of the broccoli and the one potentially salvageable parsley babby.
The chives are slooooow to sprout. 2/20 have visibly germinated.
I had to restart the onions, because they all collapsed. The new batch is just starting to germinate.
