LinkedIn Outreach

The Goal: Increase my network in Africa via LinkedIn.

There is no sales involved. We want to be transparent in my intentions and not ask for annything more than a connection.

Step 1: Initial Search

Click “Search”

When the drop down menu appears, press your enter key

In the row of buttons at the dashboard, click “People”

Click the “Connections” button and select “2nd”

Press “Show Results”

Step 2: Filtering Results

At this point there will be ~1.8m results.

For the best results, you only select people with at least 6 mutual connections.

However, in most cases I will provide extra instructions to filter people based on:

Location (Most likely Nairobi or Johannesburg)

The “Connections of” filter

The “Followers of” filter

For “Connections of” and“Followers of”, follow these instructions:

Click the “All filters” button

In the window that opens, input the name of the LinkedIn profile you’ve been instructed to use.

Generally speaking, the motivation for choosing between these fields is as follows:

Connections of: people with whom I share personal or professional ties

Followers of: people who follow the same industry influencers as me

You’ll be provided with clear instructions on how to use all of these fields throughout this project.

However, I’ve also included some profiles you can use to grow my network on an ongoing basis.

Step 3: Picking & Reviewing Profiles

Once all the filters are in place, open every relevant profile in a new window.

I suggest opening 10 at a time, so you don’t get overwhelmed.

You must open the profiles before sending a connection request!

Otherwise it looks like I’m not actually interested in them, I’m just growing my network with random people.

Step 4: The Outreach Messages

Once on a person’s profile, here’s the process:

Click the “More” button

Click “Connect”

In the window that opens, click “Add a note”

Paste in one of the scripts below

Include the person’s name

Click “Send”

Warning!

Triple check you have spelled the name correctly. You can copy it from within the window. There is absolutely no excuse for getting someone’s name wrong.

Do not deviate from the scripts provided unless I provide an alternative.

7. Close the tab, and continue the next profile, repeating the exact same process every time.

“Hi ...,

Just reaching out as I recently moved to Joburg and I'm growing my network a little.

I saw we have some mutual friends, and found your profile really interesting. So I figured, no harm in saying hello!

Looking forward to connecting, and hopefully meeting one day soon.

Best, Conor”

If connecting with someone in South Africa, but not Johannesburg (e.g, Cape Town):

“Hi ...,

Just reaching out as I recently moved to SA and I'm growing my network a little.

I saw we have some mutual friends, and found your profile really interesting. So I figured, no harm in saying hello!

Looking forward to connecting, and hopefully meeting one day soon.

Best, Conor”

Hi …,

Just reaching out as I’m expanding my network a little and saw we have plenty of mutual connections. :)

I found your profile really interesting, too. So, I figured no harm in saying hello!

Looking forward to connecting and maybe meeting IRL one day soon.
