CohereDAO WHY

Hello! We’re in the midst of exploring the WHY of CohereDAO :)
Please input your thoughts on the WHY for YOU around the CohereDAO:
Logan: To allow communal inclusivity in governing how the network(ltd.) grows globally, develops, and supports regenerative local projects. (I am curious about eventually using a to help creative flow and generate visuals)
Martin: Move away from centralized governance towards decentralized governance
Marcus: Build more equitable and regenerative futures for all
Adam: To work in a collective group to identify, co-create, and activate cohere locations in a way that regenerates the land + mind/bodies/spirits of those participating and in the local area.
Cohere Ltd: Revenue mgmnt + Capital Allocation, high level strategic direction, partnerships (i.e. coordinating with local leadership structures to embed locations as regenerative forces in community)
DAO: Building out locations, enriching them (i.e. creating a farm), and activating them (i.e. hosting a permaculture workshop or yoga event). Also activating + engaging with local community around cohere locations.

Martin:
I thought I would enlarge the scope of the WHY question, as a way not to mix up the different WHYs.
In my mind, we should answer the WHY question for each working part of COHERE in order not to mix them together. There is the COHERE organisation, or original “idea” of what COHERE is, which is what holds the values, principles, vision etc (kind of like a constitution or a bill of rights), then there is the LTD and the DAO which are governance, decision making and executive bodies which serve as the operationalization instruments of COHERE (designed to apply the constitution, to make it “real”, to manifest the vision, ideals, principles in the real world), much like our governments are (normally) instruments at the service of a constitution.
Hope this makes sense!
WHY?
COHERE:
To build innovative co-living co-working spaces with a regenerative purpose
To support local communities in the realization of their regenerative projects
To contribute towards a brighter future by forming a network of resilient and regenerative communities
COHERE LTD: to serve as the centralized legal wrapper for COHERE and COHERE DAOs activities
COHERE (global) DAO:
To serve as the decentralized governance body of COHERE and COHERE LTD (gradually), since decentralized governance is aligned with the core values of the COHERE vision, leaving a pyramidal structure of power, and moving towards a flowing network;
These three points below are probably more related to the WHAT
To manage existing and build future COHERE locations
To advise and support local communities in their activities (liaise with the regional bionodes DAOs)
To help implement and refine COHERE’s objectives and principles
In a more traditional sense:
COHERE can be viewed as a constitution and the judiciary branch (supreme court), holding the core principles of the organisation, via the combination of regenerative community land trusts (or equivalent system) and the adopted sets of principles;
COHERE (global) DAO as the legislative branch, which defines what should be done, the activities of the COHERE LTD, managing the budget and finances, in line with the principles as defined by COHERE;
COHERE LTD can be viewed as the executive branch, which applies whatever the COHERE DAO has decided.
The lines between those 3 would be more and more blurred of course since the administrative branch of government (local governments, civil servants) would be distributed throughout the COHERE DAO and other governance bodies. The COHERE LTD would gradually merge with the COHERE DAO to become an instrument to make the DAO compatible with the existing centralized systems of governance.
Hey
@Martin Schmalzried
, thanks for taking the time to scope this out with such detailed orientation.
Question: Within this layout, is COHERE (judiciary branch) an actual entity? I have not heard of this being discussed or brought to the table. It seems to make sense, that, what is holding the core principles of the organization is an entity itself. Or can it just be a Network Mission Statement and non-entity?
@Logan Gray
We discussed it yesterday, when we were discussing the WHY, but in my own view, I believe we are mixing up the “why” of the COHERE original idea or project (as envisioned by the core founders, and improved/tweaked by all the beautiful humans who joined the project, including you and me and everyone participating in this), and the COHERE DAO, which is the governance body which will be in charge to implement the vision, even if it will also have a role in tweaking it. For me, it doesn’t make sense to create a DAO without a mandate, without clear limits and boundaries as to what it’s supposed to do, a core mission. That’s how you end up with a “save the world DAO”, or also a “swiss army knife” DAO. Imagine if you’re hired by a corporation, and you’re not given any indication as to what your job entails, and you can freely define the corporations’ purpose and activities... How quickly will it turn into chaos? For me, it’s about a core number of people holding the vision (which is essentially the founders) expressing it as clearly as possible (the WHY which applies to the COHERE entity), which serves to attract the right humans who will endeavor to implement it through a governance structure which happens to be a DAO, and the WHY of the DAO is that this governance structure is what best fits or is best compatible with the core vision and values of the founders. The DAO itself isn’t, in my mind, what holds the principles or core values, it is the choice of governance instrument to help achieve it. What will need to be clarified is the evolutionary process of the vision itself: how can the core vision or principles be revised? But you have to start somewhere...

Lastly, I really love the idea of honoring the different ways people learn. One is more visually oriented. I recently saw a digital drawing board that was almost an infinite map. It had visuals, connections, arrows, and descriptions, and mapped out the many ways things are interconnected.
I read this a little while back:)
