In June...
This past week was a bit less activity, it seemed the flow was just moving at a slower pace. Devin the Moss Master, emerged from deep in the woods after communing with his tree friends We reconnected and got him caught up to speed with what is showing up in the field. We had a few critical decisions that needed to be made regarding Techstars and legal requirements to be met in order for us to proceed with the program.
Speaking of Techstars, the program start is right around the corner with our in-person week-long session beginning on July 18th. This week we had our first deep dive conversation where the managing director of our program gets a good assessment of what Cohere most needs right now. Ryan, the MD, clearly outlined the high level focus our company should take to get the most advantage from Techstars, which upleveled our excitement for the coming weeks and months.
The fact that the Techstars program is up and coming for us is supporting us continuing to develop our understanding of the next steps in team configurations and objectives tied to key results. At times it has felt uncomfortable not knowing with total clarity what the plan is for the next year or more. This process has shown that sometimes it's best to just focus on the step in front of us and let each step inform the next. We can know where we are going but how to get there is being discovered in the moment.
In July...
During the previous week Dakotah, Devin, Kirsten, Adora and I worked to prepare for Techstars and develop a foundational team to operate in during this accelerator. There were a lot of really valuable orientation meetings to learn how best to get the most out of the program. We took that foreknowledge and started implementing guide rails to support us in this process.
At the end of that week, Dakotah, Devin and I all met up in LA and drove down to San Diego for our first official week of Techstars in person. There was a lot of excitement in the space and tons of valuable experience. The week was packed with programming like a workshop that honed into our most critical needs by making a 2x2 matrix to see the priority of needs the company has based on our current understanding. We had a business expert and author come give a super insightful presentation on the customer journey and what components are most valuable on that journey. That session barely scratched the surface on the information available to really hone in the customer journey.
During this Techstars week, we had a group dinner almost every night. These served as amazing opportunities to introduce the new cohort of founders to the growing network of investors, mentors, and entrepreneurs. The dinners also gave a chance for the fellow founders to get to know each other better. There were lots of discussions about each other's businesses and explorations on how we might be able to support each other in the future. We had the opportunity to listen to heart-felt founders' stories and the journey they took running their company's. We left the week full of curious new insights that we can explore and iterate on. We finished off the week drafting up our initial version of the company OKR while going through Techstars and outlining some of the objectives to consider on a weekly basis.
On Monday we will start establishing a more stable cadence of meetings to support a consistent structure and routine to the operations. This will be generated by creating simple weekly OKRs which will help focus us on the most important tasks and define the roles & responsibilities for the team. Ideally this weekly OKR practice will be the perfect training ground for a harmoniously functioning system and will set us up with the best momentum going forward beyond the program.
