Block Walking with MiniVAN
The map will show you each house in your list. Tap on a number bubble to see the address, and click on the address to see who lives there. When someone answers, click on the name of the person behind the door to see the questions you need to answer.
If they do not answer the door, find their phone number by selecting the Details tab and scrolling down. Give them a call, and if they don’t answer, click on I Couldn’t Reach This Contact and mark Not Home.
If they do answer, go to the Script tab. Check off the appropriate boxes as you go through the script. You will also need to look at the Details tab to see whether they voted in 2020 and what their polling location is. If there is any letter next to where it says “General 2020” in the Details tab, it means they voted in 2020. If it’s blank, they didn’t.
Please manually save your progress as you go by clicking on the BLUE CLOUD icon in the top right corner of the screen after each canvass you complete. To go back to the map view, select the back arrow in the top left corner and continue your walk!
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to download MiniVAN or can we use it on a web browser?
MiniVAN must be downloaded as an app on a mobile device for block walking purposes.
Do you have to create an account to use MiniVAN?
Yes, you’ll need to create an ActionID account through NGP VAN to block walk. To create an account, you will need to provide your name, email, and a valid phone number.
MiniVAN is not tracking my location.
You must ALLOW MiniVAN to have access to your location through your device ‘settings’
a) iPhone: Go to Settings → Privacy. Make sure location services are turned on.
b) Android: Swipe down from the top of the screen. Touch and hold the location icon, which looks like a location pin.
My MiniVAN homepage says that I have access to more than one database tab or state. Do I choose a database?
You can disregard choosing a database. After you enter your list number, it will use the appropriate database.
My screen is stuck on the “Downloading List” page.
Close out of the app on your device and reopen it. If this does not work, try moving to a different spot with better signal (if you can connect to a nearby wifi source, your list will download faster)
Note: MiniVAN will generate a list of the 50 doors closest to you when you download your list, so wait to do so until you’re in the area where you plan to knock doors.
How do I sync my list?
Auto-sync will automatically be on, but we ask that you manually sync your list as you go by clicking on the BLUE CLOUD icon in the top right corner of the screen.
I cannot get my list to sync even though I have clicked on the cloud icon.
You should be able to access your list on the device for up to 24 hours, so try to sync your list once your device is connected to wifi again.
After I select ‘NEXT HH’ (next household) it shows me a list of names, how do I get back to the map?
Click the arrow in the top left corner of the screen to get back to the map view.
What do I do when I receive an error message upon opening the app?
Please close the app and reopen it. Tip: Move to a different location, because your signal/connection can halt the app.
(If this does not work, try deleting the app from your device and re-downloading it)
What do I do when the distributed list gives me an error message?
file to double-check that the number matches. (Make sure you are not using an EXPIRED list number)
When I put in the distributed list number, no houses come up.
Make sure you are using the correct number: there is one for rural areas and one for suburban/urban areas.
A house that another organizer already canvassed is showing up as “Not Attempted” on my map.
If you are using a specific list for an event - these lists are updated with our voter information at the time of creation, so if they are contacted between the list being cut and being used, the door will still show on the map. Though if this happens, it generally will be a quick “I’ve already spoken to someone” and you can move on.
If you are using the distributed list - this list is updated automatically with our voter information based on the time you entered in that list number into your app. If you update your canvass results, make sure it has synced, and then pull a new list using the distributed number, that door will be off the map.
I can’t sync right now because I don’t have signal.
If you’re unable to sync, write down the answers you collect from canvassing. Then, when you have signal, you can enter in the same list number and put in the answers.
A host is getting an error when they log in to the MiniVan app for the first time.
Ask them to uninstall and reinstall the app and try to log in again.
A few dots on my list map are not anywhere near the correct location at all. What is going on?
This is unfortunately due to out-of-date or inaccurate geolocation data from VAN, and is not something we’re able to correct. You can pull up the address on Google maps and attempt to knock if you are able, or you can move to a different location and pull a new list.
