As student teachers, the practical semester offers us the opportunity to gain important professional experience while still studying, which makes it easier to transition into the subsequent teacher training period. At the same time, however, it also presents us with challenges, such as coordinating lesson preparation and completing coursework in the form of study projects in the various subject areas. In addition to the content of the preparatory and accompanying seminars in the master's program, the mentoring program for empirical projects and final theses offers screencasts and workshops on the topic of "research-based learning." This program is intended to help clarify open questions, deepen knowledge, and master the balancing act between practice and theory during the practical semester. You can watch the screencasts directly here at any time . Registration is required for the workshops .
The corresponding PDF files can be found at the bottom of this page under " Workshop Materials " and in the tile " Material Collections & Links "
The current program, along with further information on content and registration procedures, can be found below. MEPA looks forward to your participation!

Screencasts

Methods of data collection - measuring instruments
Methods of data collection - measuring instruments
The central question of this presentation is: Which measurement instruments are suitable for collecting which data/for which research question? This screencast is particularly useful if you're not yet sure which method to use.
You will get an overview of:
observation
test
interview
questionnaire
observation
This screencast introduces observation as a data collection method. It explains step by step how to prepare for an observation. Worked examples of standardized, semi-standardized, and non-standardized observations should help you understand the steps.

Reading questionnaires
This presentation will cover the scanning of questionnaires that have been printed and then completed by hand. You'll learn important information about designing your questionnaires and gain insight into how scanning works with the Remark software.

Workshops in winter semester 21/22

Evaluation options & data management within the framework of study projects in PS, Part I
Date: Friday, December 17, 2021, 4–6 p.m. Online workshop via Zoom
Workshop DescriptionTarget group: This workshop is aimed at master's students who are unsure about the analysis options available for the data collected as part of their study projects. Content: What types of data are there? What information can be obtained from which data types? What must be considered and how must the data be collected? These are key questions that should be considered when planning study projects. How exactly this works and what planning and analysis options are available will be examined in more detail in the workshop "Analysis Options & Data Management in the Context of Study Projects in the PS, Part I."
Evaluation options & data management within the framework of study projects in PS, Part II
Date: Friday, 21.01.2022, 4–6 p.m. Online workshop via Zoom
Workshop DescriptionTarget group: This workshop is aimed at master's students who wish to gain a proficiency in statistical calculations using Excel. Content: Data collection for their study projects is either in progress or has already been completed. What happens after the data collection? How can the data be statistically correctly analyzed and interpreted, and how can it be (visually) prepared for the seminar papers for the study projects? The second part of the workshop series, "Analysis Options & Data Management," offers answers to these questions. Important note: Part 2 of the workshop series builds on the content of the first part. Participation in the workshop "Analysis Options & Data Management as Part of the Study Project in PS, Part 1" is not a prerequisite for this workshop, but is recommended.

Workshops in the summer semester 2021

Empirical research in teacher training
Date: Wednesday, June 9, 2021, 6–8 p.m. Online workshop via Zoom
Workshop DescriptionTarget Group: This workshop is aimed at both bachelor's students who are still in their practical semester and would like to gather initial ideas for their practical semester, as well as master's students who are transitioning into their practical semester this semester and are still looking for topics for their study projects. Content: The focus of this workshop is to clarify the role that research-based learning plays both in teacher training and in one's own professional practice. It is intended to help clarify the requirements of the study projects and to provide methods for finding topics for empirical research and theses. Each phase of the study project is accompanied by a variety of considerations and decisions. In the workshop on "Empirical Research in Teacher Training," we will work together to identify these and to clarify the possibilities and limitations of empirical research.
Survey methods within the study projects
Date: Wednesday, June 23, 2021, 6–8 p.m. Online workshop via Zoom
Workshop DescriptionTarget group: This workshop is primarily aimed at students who already have a research idea for their study projects and would like to know which data collection methods or measurement instruments are best suited to their project. Content: The data collection method arises from the research question, not the other way around! This is a guiding principle that arises repeatedly when dealing with empirical research approaches and methods. We will explore exactly what this means in the workshop "Data Collection Methods in the Context of Study Projects." We will focus on the measurement instruments that are particularly suitable for your individual research questions. Note: Participation in the workshop is also possible without a specific research question!
Data management
Date: Wednesday, July 14, 2021, 6–8 p.m. Online workshop via Zoom
Workshop DescriptionTarget Group: This workshop is aimed at students who, before beginning their practical semester, would like to gain an overview of how to process, evaluate, and present the data collected as part of their study projects. Content: From sampling to data analysis – data management plays a key role in the planning and implementation of study projects during the practical semester, as it determines the traceability of the empirical study. We will work together in the "Data Management" workshop to explore the different data types and their visualization options.

General information about the learning modules

Tabs

(Selected)
The following learning units are intended for basic and independent familiarization with the respective topic areas of empirical work within the framework of teacher training. They do not claim to represent the scientific discourse on methodology. The procedures and aspects of scientific, empirical, or statistical work presented here should be understood as one perspective among many. If other approaches to empirical, research-based learning are presented in the preparatory and accompanying seminars, these are definitely preferable to the content of this self-study area. All learning modules are divided into individual chapters, which can be accessed individually within the learning units via the table of contents on the left side of the screen. Each learning module can be repeated as often as desired. Have fun and success with the self-study area of the MEPA eCampus course!
