UPSC Mains is a summative assessment exam. These are the characteristics of an effective summative assessment exam:
Validity: Should measure what it appears to be. For UPSC - prelims it’s testing understanding of current events, general awareness, analytical and logical reasoning.
Reliability: Two people who are equally competent in the thing that is being measured should end up with the same result every time.
Practical & Scalable: Ease of implementation and high participation so that participants get a clear picture of where they stand.
Formative & Positive: Should inform future learning, improvement areas for candidate
Ethical: All participant should be evaluated fairly on their skills and knowledge. No participant should have unfair advantage over others. This is more of a behavior change, difficult to solve and is not taken into consideration in the test prep market
In the market, traditional coaching institutes like Vajiram, Vision IAS, and Drishti excel in creating mock tests that closely resemble the actual exam and have a large student base for comparison (Points 1,2 and 3)
Newer companies like Unacademy, Testbook, and Edurev focus more on providing detailed analytics and video-based solutions for post-test analysis. (Point 4)
However, there is still a gap in providing relevant content to learners, which can help them study efficiently without getting overwhelmed by the abundance of available material.
All competitors have addressed the issue of access to questions and test series, but there is limited intervention in terms of student motivation.
Factors like engagement, gamification, immediate gratification, and personalization are often overlooked but can play a crucial role in enhancing student motivation.
