Resume & LinkedIn review checklist

There’s no shortage of excellent LinkedIn and resume review guidance out there, but the reality is that this guidance is often incredibly specific to industry, experience, and candidate goals, which may not map to what your job seeker’s looking for.
Here’s a short starter list of things to look for and questions you can ask the job seeker to help partner with them on ways to finesse their resume.

Questions to ask
1
Tell a story of their career trajectory, progression in responsibilities between roles, and relevant experience for the role of interest.
Do the thinking for the recruiter and make it easy for them to understand how well you fit with what they’re looking for.
Did your responsibilities increase when you changed roles? If so, what were those changes?
What type of work would you like to do next and what are you okay removing from your resume? This way we can better clarify your background for the recruiter and hiring manager.
2
Show, not tell what’s been accomplished, e.g., including quantifying impact where relevant. Or is it more of a laundry list of tasks, where it’s unclear why these tasks were meaningful?
Why were these tasks important for the business / department?
What happened as a result of these tasks - or what would have been the consequences of not doing these?
3
Map to the job description (JD) in terms of content knowledge and skills required for the role.
Can you walk me through some more details of the projects you’re referencing?
It actually sounds like that work is exactly what this role requires. How might we use some of the language in the JD to talk about these projects?
4
Look different from or stay the same as their LinkedIn profile. There’s no hard rules here, but it’s important to assess what details go where to get the most mileage out of both.
