DATA VISUALIZATION OF LABOUR SUPPLY OF MEDICAL PRACTIOTIONERS IN VIHIGA COUNTY IN WESTERN KENYA

Have edited capstone proposal
Labour supply is a challenge for county and national governments in Kenya. What is available matched against what is lacking so as to provide adequate staffing interventions, especially for professions such as doctors, teachers, and engineers. I want to build a data visualization project that will capture this disparity in staffing of doctors in Vihiga County and also identify supply side interventions that may exist as a result of an oversupply of critical personnel in other counties. The most significant challenge I foresee is the sourcing of data... especially at county level.
NEW CAPSTONE PROPOSAL

SUPPLY Vs. DEMAND OF MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

Kenya has 58,000 registered nurses, 12,000 registered doctors, and 14,000 clinical officers as at August 2022. The density of doctors, nurses and clinical officers per 10 000 population in Kenya doubled by 108% from 14.47 in 2006 to 30.14 in 2021 from 2006 to 2021 with the average growth rate being 7%. These numbers reflect the situation at the National Level in Kenya. The situation could be more dire in other countries on the African continent. The current situation lends to African doctors being overworked, underpaid and underequipped to address matters health on the continent.
The data visualization project that I will be undertaking will seek to:
- Map out the number of doctors per country in Africa.
- Identify the medical workers by virtue of their specializations.
- Map out the gaps between supply and demand viz a viz the recommended doctor patient ratio from WHO
- Make proposals how these gaps can be addressed
