Lab 5 Overview
This lab will be conducted using WR Ground Control, X-Plane 11 and FS - Flight Control. These software will be working all together to simulate the experience of an ULTRA Flight. Each person must become proficient in Ground Control and X-Plane. This lab will require everyone to work efficiently! This lab will be done in randomly assigned partners. We have limited computers so please help by offering your machine to others when you are finished. Students will start this lab The purpose of the lab is to begin training everyone as a GCS operator as well as Safety Pilot.
In downtime please read the upcoming portions of the lab to be prepared.
Resources
Flight Requirements
Each person will plan their own mission that will be used to fly a simulated ULTRA.
Intentional poor planning of this mission will result in an automatic 0.
Flight must be out of KLAF using any runway you like The aircraft must meet a minimum altitude of 700ft A complete left-hand circuit with the following: Please take your time to make this a professional flight plan to save time for everyone
Once your mission is completely planned, please export your mission and save it.
GCS Operator
Upload Mission
Using your planned mission import your mission into one of the Simulation GCS Computers in NISW 116. Upload your mission and press submit. You will likely have errors that need to be addressed. Take your time to read the errors and figure out how to correct them.
Checklist
Once your mission is upload successfully complete the Believer Checklist with your Safety Pilot to ensure aircraft readiness
During Flight
Observe the GCS Screen and ensure the aircraft is on its intended flight path. Monitor all of the instruments. It is required to switch the aircraft into Stabilized mode initiated from the safety pilot and to switch the aircraft into auto mode initiated by the GCS operator. Please follow . Safety Pilot
The role of the safety pilot is to be able to take control of the aircraft in case of an emergency. While the GCS operator is prepping mission familiarize yourself with the DATX using . Move the control surfaces and observe how they deflect. Ensure your SPAS is receiving connection and view the data. Checklist
When the GCS operator is ready complete the Believer Checklist with your GCS operator to ensure aircraft readiness
During Flight
Observe the SPAS Screen and watch the aircraft to ensure the aircraft is on its intended flight path. Monitor the aircraft and your data spots. It is required to switch the aircraft into Stabilized mode initiated from the safety pilot and to switch the aircraft into auto mode initiated by the GCS operator. Please follow . Control Transfer Process Example
Communication is key in aviation. All Believer operations will follow the example transfer of control below.
Control transfer follows a three-step callout:
