An experiential method to bridge the gap between strategy and lived reality.
The next step within tourism destination development is place development through tourism – how tourism should not be an end in itself, but contribute to the overall vitality of a place. Yet putting this into practice has proven difficult. Research points to conflicting goals, a lack of shared direction, and challenges with long-term collaboration.
Tillsammans (“Together”) introduces a new, experience-based approach to these challenges. The method is built on megagames – large-scale simulations where participants play roles, negotiate, and collaborate around complex dilemmas related to a place’s future. Over the course of a single day, 20–100 participants can collectively model a place’s development, make interdependencies visible, and test new solutions.
Combining elements of roleplay, scenario planning, and service design, the megagame makes systemic complexity tangible and opens space for experimentation. Participants gain insight into the perspectives and constraints of other stakeholders – from local residents and businesses to policymakers and environmental actors – creating empathy and shared understanding as a foundation for co-creation.
Tillsammans is developed through a collaboration between practitioners in Swedish tourism and researchers at the University of Stavanger, and is currently being implemented in Region Jönköping – the first region in Sweden to apply the method in practice, supported by the EU Regional Development Fund.
The aim is to strengthen systemic awareness, support innovation, and empower local process leaders to continue developing the work after the project ends.
