The Abundance Project is a community-driven living laboratory that aims to prototype and exemplify post-capitalist systems of abundance across all societal domains.
Project Objectives
Demonstrate the viability of alternative monetary, economic, governance, health, food, legal, education, and value systems that internalize the true costs and consequences of human activities.
Foster a transition from a class-based society to a values-based society, informed by original indigenous principles of interconnectedness, collaboration, and abundance.
Serve as a global example and inspiration for communities seeking to embrace a shift in consciousness towards planetary awareness and post-capitalist realities.
The Abundance Project is an ambitious community-led initiative aimed at creating a living laboratory and prototype for a post-capitalist society based on the principles of abundance. Centered in
region of the Western Cape, South Africa, the project seeks to birth entirely new systems across various societal domains, transcending the prevailing capitalist paradigm. The following table summarizes the systems we believe will form a key part of the project.
Key Components
Worker-owned cooperatives producing artisanal and high-quality food products, marketed globally through a primary cooperative.
A governance system consisting of a hybrid of direct participatory democracy through citizen assemblies and constitutionally-enshrined rights, delegating decision-making to technically-skilled guilds of resource stewards and civic facilitators. Governance will have a high focus on respecting natural boundaries and regenerating the commons.
Holistic healthcare emphasizing natural immunity and resilience over profit-driven pharmaceuticals.
Self-directed, curiosity-driven, and collaborative educational approaches.
Legal systems prioritizing stewardship, compassion, and restorative justice.
Value systems rooted in familial equality, spontaneity, collaboration, and unity.
Stakeholders and Community Engagement
Primary stakeholders: 20,000 local residents of the Valley of Grace, with around 150 identified leaders from faith-based groups, activist groups, and indigenous wisdom keepers.
Extensive partnerships and collaborations with external organizations and institutions as required.
Emphasis on community-led transformation and development, with minimal input from project initiators.
Implementation Approach
Agile and adaptive methodology, embracing continuous feedback loops and a "failing forward" mindset.
Regular adjustments and pivots based on dynamic learnings and emerging challenges.
Future Expansion and Scaling
Long-term vision to establish two additional nodes along the Breede River Valley—one at the source of the Breede River near Ceres and another at the mouth at Witsand—creating an interconnected network along the entire length and breadth of the Breede River Valley.
Replication of the model across other river basins in South Africa.
Hosting visiting delegations of national and international researchers to inspire similar initiatives across South Africa, the continent, and globally.
The Abundance Project represents a bold experiment in reimagining societal systems and values, offering a transformative blueprint for communities seeking to embrace post-capitalist realities and planetary awareness.
