Week 1 - in-Person (Oct 14-Oct 18)
TO Processes problem chosen
Made several phone calls and gathered information from other bases
Talked to the FAM, she mentioned the ETIMS client process is very liked but most bases don’t have the infrastructure for the WIFI connection needed thats why is not implemented
Week 2 - Virtual (Oct 21-Oct 25)
Oct 22
Steve sent a couple contacts that we can reach out to for interviews and support.
• First Steps:
Get MacBooks setup with profiles and ETIMS client Communicate w/ Comm concerning certificates • TCTOs are digital at several other bases
• Dr. Sid suggested trying Script Editor (Apple) - to replace manual process of copying over files
Week 3 - Virtual (Oct 28-Nov1)
Oct 29
• Tests
ETIMS Client loaded to iPads; current issue is that only 600 of 1,600 files are being loaded — ticket exists and has been elevated; pending response Apple script is used within the ETIMS client software used for updates; could save an entire day’s worth of work • Reframe the problem
• Prepare for simulation/walkthrough of entire process during a deployment situation
• Pending answer to question of how this process is handled in a deployed location
Experimented taking an ipad home to connect it to a better network, it ran more smoothly and completed the update with no errors
Was able to load ETIMS Client on the Macbook and iPad In order to get the PFK certificate necessary to make the Macbook a primary eTool is a long process but I was able to do it myself without getting Comm flight involved The issue we are running into now is that the library is not uploading in its entirety to either item Contacted the help desk for AFTOST, to ask questions in regards to the issues I am having, waiting on response Haven’t had a chance to make any new phone calls
Week 4 - in-Person (Nov 4-Nov 9)
Came up with a final problem statement that provides all the points we need in order to sell the issue Will be contacting Comm at the 162nd to learn what kind of WIFI capabilities we have on the commercial side Concluded that network connectivity is the issue we need to research and tackle at this point in order to implement the more efficient and modern TO distribution process Our POC at the 162nd Comm SQ provided us with the RDW form to request network access and possible modification to our working areas, with a 90-day turnaround. These working areas are the storage locations for the sub-account iPads (H 10, H 12, BLDG 33, BLDG 49, and the Engine shop). If granted access, we should be able to update iPads between 12 pm and 4 am daily with no drain during peak operating times for network users. We would need justification to work off the commercial WiFi until the supporting NIPR WiFi is fixed. Comm will give an estimate of what it will take to get the job done and we would have to find the assets or financing to cover it. Met with MXG CC Col James Murphy. Emma explained the entire process and problem. Showed ETIMS on iPad. Col Murphy was supportive and said that he’d help push the request to Comm. Also spoke with Chief Brett Garrett to fill him in. He’s excited about the process. Benefits:
Mass deletion of outdated TOs; previous process had to be manual for each file and for each iPad.
Week 5 (11 Nov - 15 Nov)
• WiFi Issues:
• The WiFi speed should be sufficient (2GB), but a speed test showed only 9MB of bandwidth.
• The installed infrastructure was verified as not outdated or causing the issue.
• Communication Flight is investigating to identify the cause of weak signal strength.
• iPad Issues:
• The Air Force-wide issue was identified as related to expiring DoD certificates, with a fix expected by November 18.
• Progress is on hold for testing and updating iPads until the issue is resolved.
• Next Steps:
• Once resolved, 10 more iPads will be loaded for testing, and feedback on the new process will be gathered from selected personnel.
Week 6 (18 Nov - 22 Nov)
Week 7 (25-27 Nov)
Week 8 (02-06 Dec)
05 Dec met with COMM to evaluate current process
New hardware will be installed on 05 Dec in TODO office with better range and larger capacity to support the required additional units
Additional test will be run once the installation is complete
