It wasn’t until reading this that I considered the question of why Pharma companies market so aggressively directly to consumers. If we go to doctors who prescribe the med, what’s the point?
Two main reasons. For undiagnosed patients, they would be more likely to see a doctor if symptoms matched, which is why most of these ads target easily self-diagnosed uses like sleep difficulties or weight problems. For already diagnosed patients, it simply exposes them to a potential new option. This would be more heavily used in more rare diseases with a higher recommendation variance. There are different types of such ads targeting different groups.
Difficult to tell whether such targeting is a net positive. Reminds me a bit of the Theranos documentary and marketing fluff.
