The role of a learning buddy

What does a great first week look like for a new joiner

Things can be overwhelming when someone starts a new role. At RORA, this is even more intense as you are not just starting at one company but a few companies at the same time, because of all the new partners that you’ll be working with.
What we can do is provide all the tools that a new joiner needs to get the most out of their first week and help them settle in.
Main point of contacts
Learning buddy - The main point of contact for any questions that the new joiner has related to their day to day.

Structured learning
Courses through Kinfolk, a platform we use to facilitate the training.
At the end of week one, schedule a check-in to review all the submissions in Kinfolk with your Pod Lead.

Shadowing
As we mostly work virtually, shadowing is a great opportunity for a new joiner to get a feel for the role. The learning buddy should invite the new joiner to join them on any meetings or to watch them complete a task for a partner in 15 - 30 min blocks.

As the learning buddy, what are my main responsibilities

Day one
On the new joiner’s first day, you will be walking them through what their first day and first week is going to look like by sharing the following slides.
The session should take about 30 minutes.
📆 You will be prompted by Process Street to schedule a time with the new joiner on their first day
Day five
At the end of the first week, the new joiner will have completed the “Introduction - Being a FinOps Associate / Manager / Lead” path on Kinfolk. As the learning buddy, you will review the answers of the “Case study” section together with the new joiner.
There are multiple correct answers to the Case study, although there will be obviously wrong answers. The most important thing is for the learning buddy to share some of their experiences through the case study. This is most effectively done as a discussion between the two of you.
The session should take about 1 hour.
📆 You will be prompted by Process Street to schedule a time with the new joiner on their day five.
Ad hoc
You will also be expected to answer any ad hoc questions the new joiner has throughout the week related to their role.

Who else is involved in welcoming a new joiner?

Quite a lot of people are involved in making sure our new joiners settles in as quickly as possible. You can see the full extent of all the different squad’s involvement in the board below or in the Process Street checklist.
