Course Outline

Course Name: Physics, Grade 12, University Preparation Course Code: SPH4UI Prerequisite: SPH3UI Textbook: (Replacement Cost $99.95) Teacher: Mr. Robert Emrich Email: Phone: 519-576-5100 Curriculum Document:

Abstract

This physics course will be taught in a learning environment that promotes inclusivity and empowers students to learn, grow and succeed. This course enables students to deepen their understanding of physics concepts and theories. Students will continue their exploration of energy transformations and the forces that affect motion, and will investigate electrical, gravitational, and magnetic fields and electromagnetic radiation. Students will also explore the wave nature of light, quantum mechanics, and special relativity. They will further develop their scientific investigation skills, learning, for example, how to analyse, qualitatively and quantitatively, data related to a variety of physics concepts and principles. Students will also consider the impact of technological applications of physics on society and the environment.

5
Course Outcomes

By the end of this course your student must be able to:
7
Describe the nature of physical systems and their interaction with and impact on society, health and the environment.
8
Analyse interactions within physical systems and use our understanding of physical laws to describe the “what is” and predict the “what if”.
9
Investigate physical interactions and describe the results in both qualitative and quantitative terms.
10
Use the scientific method to conduct experiments, collect data, analyze data, interpret and communicate results, make valid conclusions, and present this to an audience (peers, instructors, etc.)

11
Strands of Study:

The development of scientific investigation skills and exploration of career options and Canadian contributions to the field of Physics will occur throughout the course.
This rest of the course is specifically organized into 5 units:

19
Assessment and Evaluation – Evidence of Learning:

The primary purpose of assessment and evaluation is to improve student learning. A body of evidence, along with professional judgment, will be used to determine a final grade in this course. The body of evidence will consist of observations of the student in action; conversations with the student; and evaluating your work.

21
Assessment:

Student achievement will be determined through the use of different assessment tools (test, quizzes, assignments, etc.) that are used for different purposes (formative assessment is designed to provide feedback for a student to determine where improvement is needed, and summative assessments evaluate what a student has learned) and take place at different times throughout the semester (term work occurs throughout the semester and culminating tasks occur near the end of the semester)
Furthermore, these tasks will assess the skill development of the student in the Ministry of Education’s four achievement chart categories: knowledge & understanding, thinking & inquiry, application, and communication.

24
Learning Skills

Learning skills and work habits are an important part of your growth. These are taught, assessed, and shared on your report card. This gives parents/guardians valuable information about the students’ learning and work habits.

Tips for Success

33
Find a system that allows you to focus:
34
Multitasking (including cell phone usage) is detrimental to your development as a learner.
35
If you have difficulty focusing on this or other courses, discuss strategies with your teacher.
36
Learning occurs every day
37
Your academic integrity is important. When absent from a class you are responsible to learn the material covered in class. You should access:
38
Your digital classroom
39
Additional support systems (your peers, extra help from the teacher, Student Success, and Learning Resources)
40
If you miss an assessment, have a conversation with your teacher to discuss how and when you can demonstrate your understanding.
41
Get comfortable asking for help:
42
Your teachers are here to help and *want* to ensure that you understand the course and succeed. Learn to ask questions in class, and/or arrange a time for extra help.
43
Learn to manage your time:
44
You have a lot of responsibilities with multiple courses each semester, find a way to arrive on time, attend regularly, and make plans to complete essential tasks.
45
Ensure the learning is authentic:
46
It is important for you to show your own understanding. Most assessments for this class are done within the classroom, observed by the teacher, and this helps to minimize the opportunity to plagiarize.
47
If plagiarism occurs, you may be required to redo all or part of the assessment, or complete an alternate assessment.
