Introduction

In the first phase of the urban design project, you have been working on developing the conceptual frameworks, principles, and components of the urban design, such as the paths and nodes, based on the specified themes. While designing the urban area, you have had to make some difficult decisions, including sacrificing, demolishing, adapting, and relocating some existing structures and human activities in the current site as well as the old town itself.
However, these actions have provided you with an opportunity to relocate or absorb some of the lost activities and structures in current site, which is the Maharani Artistry Avenue (MAA). By doing so, you are able to preserve the cultural heritage of the area while also creating a more modern and functional urban space that meets the needs of the current community.

Scenario

You are an architect with a background in urban design, you have been presented with a new challenging task: Designing an art and craft centre on a plot of land at the edge of Muar river on Muar’s old town side. Your objective is to create a space that is not only functional and aesthetically pleasing, but also pays homage to the historical significance of the site and at the same time trying to inject new artistic urban culture. This will require an understanding of the site’s history, as well as a creative approach to design that balances form and function.
The main client for the project has formed a team to act on their behalf. The team have selected “integration of ecological and sensory experiences” as the main concept of the art and craft centre, yet you are encouraged to explore the possibility of supporting the new concept in the art and craft centre’s design.
The team has also set up a few objectives that they want to achieve:
Firstly, the building is intended to be temporary, and the structural system must be mostly modular and salvageable.
Secondly, part of the site current function will remain and integrated/included to the placemaking spaces.
Thirdly, the art and craft centre should not be mere display of artifacts, but the use of recent and innovative concept such as the integration of interactive and immersive technologies to create a dynamic visitor experience are very much encouraged.
In addition, there will be a cafe or food court provided, as well as common public facilities such as surau and toilets.
