I am more interested in human respond and adaptation to urban environment more than the 'architecture' itself... Task
According to the resource kit given above and in a group of maximum 7, choose a site along the heritage trail in Penang for this research. Your group are required to do background desktop research on the history and significance of the site. Please identify the urban elements present at the site that contribute to the theme “Life in Between the Buildings”. Each group is required to prepare a 3-5minutes video presentation of your findings. (Please take note the video should be in HD Landscape format). You may use visual aids such as photos and videos to make your presentation more engaging. You will be evaluated based on: the quality of your research the clarity of your presentation your ability to identify urban elements. your ability to relate the urban elements to the theme “Life in Between the Buildings”, and your ability to engage the audience.
Tips in capturing the life in between buildings
Capturing the moments and human activities within an urban area can be an exciting and rewarding photography or videography endeavor. Urban environments offer a rich tapestry of subjects and scenes to document. Here are some tips to help you get started:
Spend time observing the urban environment to understand the rhythm of life and activities in the area you plan to document. Research the history, culture, and unique characteristics of the location. Knowing the context can help you tell a more compelling story. Choose a camera or smartphone with settings that allow for manual adjustments, especially in terms of exposure, focus, and shutter speed. The competition requirements stated that the pictures are preferably in landscape format and not less than 720P. Consider using a wide-angle lens to capture more of the urban scene, or a telephoto lens for candid shots from a distance. Think about the kind of moments and activities you want to capture. Plan your shoot accordingly, including the time of day and weather conditions. Use natural light whenever possible, but also explore nighttime photography for unique urban atmospheres. Frame Your Shots Creatively: Pay attention to composition and framing. Use leading lines, patterns, and symmetry to create visually interesting photos or videos. Experiment with different angles, such as low angles for a unique perspective or high angles to show the scale of the city. Candid shots often convey the authenticity of urban life. Be patient and wait for the right moments to unfold naturally. Use a long lens or a zoom feature to capture candid shots from a distance without disturbing your subjects. Consider creating a narrative or theme for your urban photography or videography project. This can help tie your images or footage together and make your work more compelling. Look for connections between different scenes or people that can help tell a larger story about the urban area. Don't be afraid to engage with people you encounter. Ask for permission before taking their photos, and be respectful of their privacy. Building a rapport with your subjects can lead to more genuine and relaxed moments. Post-processing can enhance the visual appeal of your urban shots. Experiment with editing software to fine-tune colors, contrast, and sharpness. However, avoid over-processing your images; aim for a natural look that represents the scene accurately. Capture the small details that make an urban area unique, such as street art, architectural features, or street signs. These details can add depth and character to your documentation. Stay Safe and Respectful: Be aware of your surroundings and prioritize your safety when shooting in urban areas, especially in unfamiliar neighborhoods. Respect local laws and regulations regarding photography or videography in public spaces. Remember that urban photography is about capturing the essence of a place and its people.
