To enhance the heritage quality of the old town as a tourist attraction and local community’s economic generating to the area by revitalizing the overall circulation and public space layout of the Sungai Besi Old Township.
Scenario:
The Sungai Besi Old Township, a historical mining town in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is in a state of disrepair. The town’s colonial-era heritage buildings, which are characteristic of the town, are at risk of being lost forever. The client’s plan to convert a few rows of old buildings with heritage quality into a hotel is a desperate attempt to save the town’s. It is suggested that the current retail activities in the shophouses area are to be absorbed by the new marketplace building, in order to preserve the town’s unique character.
Another identified issue is that the current placemaking and pedestrian path are not working well due to poor urban planning and connection to the nearby Sungai Besi MRT station.
Urgent action is needed to regenerate the town before it’s too late.
