Types and Severity

Defect Name: Leakage

image.png
image.png
Type of Sensor: Thermal, Video
Description: A flow, penetration of water, liquid, gas through the shell of the structure, which was supposed to prevent this. The leakage trace corresponds to the force of gravity. The leak and its trace may not be visible visually.
Severity Level:

Defect Name: Delamination

image.png
image.png
Type of Sensor: Thermal, Video
Description: It is the separation, detachment of the surface layer from the substrate body. Sometimes can be marked with cracks surrounding it.
Severity Level:

Defect Name: Wet Surface

image.png
image.png
Defect Name: Wet Surface
Type of Sensor: Thermal, Video
Description: The surface is wet (moist) due to water or liquid seepage from the inside, due to the permeability of the building material.
It indicates internal moisture and may have a shape that is not associated with gravity. Also, the surface can be moist from an external source during condensation, dew, melting, and accumulation of liquid. It can be not visually visible.
Severity Level:

Defect Name: Spalling

image.png
image.png
Subtype: Spalling with rebar corrosion, Joint Spalling, Spalling with prestressed steel corrosion
Type of Sensor: Video
Description: It is the area of concrete that cracked and detached from the substrate. The pieces of concrete may fall off completely. The most common cause of spalling is the corrosion of embedded steel reinforcement bars. Other causes are expansive effects of freeze-thaw cycling, alkali-silica reaction, thermo-mechanical forces, and exposure to fire..
Severity Level:

Defect Name: Leaching

image.png
image.png
Type of Sensor: Video
Description: It is a zone of lime washout and the formation of limestone deposits, stalactites on the surface of the concrete. Leaching also is a process of water migration through alkaline materials transporting salts to the surface.
Severity Level:
image.png

Defect Name: Efflorescence

image.png
image.png
Type of Sensor: Video
Description: It is a zone of deposition of powdered salts on the concrete surface due to evaporation of the fluid or interaction with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Efflorescence is generally not harmful but can be unsightly .
Severity Level:
image.png

Defect Name: Heterogeneity of concrete

image.png
image.png
Subtypes: Segregation, Cold Joints, Honeycombing
Type of Sensor: Video
Description: It is the kinds of concrete different in composition, density, heat capacity, thermal conductivity. main types are Segregation, Cold joints, “Honeycombs”, Segregation is the differential concentration of the components of mixed concrete, resulting in no unified proportions of the mass. A cold joint is a plane of weakness in concrete caused by an interruption or delay in the concreting operations. “Honeycomb” is the rough pitted surface or voids in concrete formed due to improper compaction or incomplete filling of the concrete.

Defect Name: Corrosion

image.png
image.png
Type of Sensor: Video
Description: The traces of corrosion on the concrete surface are the sign of the internal corrosion of the reinforcement (prestressed wires, rods, straps, mesh, anchorages). Such traces on the surface are quite rare, and the area of corrosion inside can be significantly larger.
Severity Level:

Defect Name: Peeling, scaling, flaking

image.png
image.png
Type of Sensor: Video
Description: Peeling or flaking away small particles of cement paste from the near-surface portion of the finished concrete. Peeling is the loss of adhesion and deterioration of a coating from the substrate. In literature, peeling is also called scaling, exfoliation.
Severity Level:

Defect Name: Surface Deterioration

image.png
image.png
Type of Sensor: Video
Description: This is the deterioration of the surface layer of the structure by the environment. The main types are chemical attack or roughness. small holes show up on a concrete surface. A chemical attack from the environment acts on the concrete from the surface and causes its weathering and erosion. The surface roughness can be the result of environmental action and also the reason for the increase of this action.
