Selected project experience

2019-21, Smart Meter Enabled Thermal Efficiency Ratings (BEIS)
SMETER was a BEIS innovation programme, funding the development of new tools to measure the thermal efficiency of homes using smart meter data and IoT sensors. I led technical engagement with the participating teams, managing the development, testing and demonstration of tools for BEIS.
2020, RMB Chivenor energy and carbon masterplan (Energy Systems Catapult)
I led the development of a strategic energy masterplan for RMB Chivenor, on behalf of Modern Energy Partners. Site survey, telemetry analysis, strategy development and detailed heat power assessment were undertaken to identify a suite of measures, including a heat pump network, PV array and demand measures. The masterplan cuts carbon emissions almost 50% by 2032.
2019-20, Whisky sector net zero strategy (Scotch Whisky Association)
The Scotch Whisky Association commissioned a net zero study to inform their ambitious new climate change commitments. I led the study and identified the key technologies for zero carbon whisky production across member companies. Net zero modelling, stakeholder engagement & pathways analysis.
2020-21, Facilitation of energy storage services (Northern Ireland Electricity)
The FESS project is setting the framework for integrating energy storage into the Northern Ireland electricity network. Storage will become part of business as usual network management as a result. I was the project’s senior energy storage specialist.
2019-20, Energy storage + EV charging due diligence (Enterprise M3 LEP)
Specialist due diligence advice to the LEP on proposal to install a 50MW battery energy storage system alongside a EV charging hub. The due diligence assessment comprises a detailed review of the business case, financial modelling and technical proposals.
2019, Subsidy free solar farm and storage feasibility study (Confidential)
A multidisciplinary team undertook a detailed feasibility study for an innovative subsidy free solar farm proposal. Detailed modelling revealed the potential for a MW-scale solar farm to serve large energy consumers via a private wire. Raphael led the assessment of a hybrid energy storage system, using in-house tools to model the business case for a range of revenue stack options.
2020, Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (Local Energy Scotland)
Programme manager for the Scottish Government's CARES programme, which gave community energy groups advice and funding in all aspects of local, renewable heat and power. I led the review which has set funding priorities for the next 4 years.
2020, Sheffield net zero strategy (Sheffield City Council)
Ricardo & Arup developed a strategy to meet the city’s net zero 2030 goal. I led the analysis of the Council’s estate, including its buildings, fleet and land. The study produced a pathway to net zero for assets, supported by a detailed set of priority measures and investments.
2018-19, Modern Energy Partners energy masterplan pilot (Energy Systems Catapult)
Modern Energy Partners designed an integrated energy approach for complex public estates through a pilot HMP Sheppey. It’s scaling up to meet the public sector’s 50% by 2032 carbon target. I established the strategic approach to masterplanning and led the renewable and storage tasks.
2015–21, 100 Resilient Cities monitoring and evaluation (The Urban Institute for the Rockefeller Foundation)
Project director working with the Urban Institute in Washington DC to evaluate the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities programme. 100RC is helping cities around the world become more resilient to physical, social and economic stresses and shocks. My team is responsible for the evaluation of European, Middle Eastern & North African cities.
2016, Tender assessment for energy storage (Smart Klub and University of Nottingham)
Expert advice through the procurement of a 500kW 2.1MWh energy storage system as part of a solar PV system integrated into a new housing development. Working with the university and industry specialists, the developer is pursuing a novel community energy supplier approach with the energy store at its heart.
Raphael evaluated the tenders offered by 6 suppliers and undertook an assessment of technical performance, whole life value for money metrics, product and performance warranty level as well as delivery and installation. Tesla was selected following our recommendation and the system has since been commissioned.
2014-15, Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (Ofgem)
A pilot audit programme for Ofgem of the the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) to assess compliance with the RHI Regulations and support improvements to the renewable heat subsidy scheme. Technologies included biomass boilers, solar thermal, air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps.
