Do you feel nervous reading about the #layoffs happening on a nearly daily basis these days? This article may be helpful for you to be in a better state in this market.
Corporate world does a reasonable job in helping us prepare for emergencies such as #earthquakes, #fire, #medical, etc. But unfortunately it is doing nothing to help everyone prepare for a more likely emergency situation in the form of #layoffs. Here is a step in that direction from my end.
Be Prepared! - Beat the Layoffs fuss with FESS - Financially, Emotionally, Skillfully and Socially
Make a plan!
Financially - Build an emergency fund (~6 times your monthly expenses) to navigate through in case you encounter such a challenge. Don't simply rely on the severance package. Severance package, if any, should just further add cushion. Hence such an event shouldn't freak you out for financial reasons and it almost becomes a non event for you and your family.
Emotionally - This decision is something beyond your control. If and when it happens, you should feel like you gave your best. If that's not enough, then be it. There is a better opportunity waiting for you. Being in a healthy emotional space is better for your current and future health. Hence you shouldn't let this event drown yourself.
Skillfully - Regardless of layoffs, one should continue to hone their respective skills. In case you do end up finding extra time on hand due to layoffs, utilize it to pick a new skill set or further refine your existing ones. It will only help and not harm you.
Socially - I feel this is extremely critical. At work and outside, we build relations. Not just for good times but challenging times as well. Help others, be good to others. When times are tough, these good deeds give you inner strength to navigate through. It's totally ok to not feel ok at times and you should reach out to the same folks whom you feel comfortable talking to.
I know for a lot of us on work/non-immigrant visa status, the situation can be more challenging. But again, Be Prepared. Have a plan B in place. And remember, nothing is more important than your own peace of mind. And unless you are in a good place mentally, you won't be able to recognize the best options that lie ahead of you whether it is in terms of your work authorization choices or employment opportunity.
But, does it really work?
Well, to begin with, I am sharing these tips from my personal experience. So at least it worked for me. In addition, I shared same tips with another co-worker who found it very helpful in relaxing those nerves fearing the layoffs.
A few weeks ago, I got to know that my journey to serve eBay sellers is coming to an end. I sure was bummed but I am more excited for the opportunities ahead.
First of all, in the current market conditions, I had been preparing myself how to deal with such a situation and feel extremely proud of the way I am handling it. Secondly, I am super excited for the new set of users I will be catering to.
I can definitely vouch that the tips shared above worked for me immensely. I feel financially secure, very tough emotionally, continue to hone my skills and I feel overwhelmed with the kind of support I have received from my colleagues, friends and family over the past few weeks. I can't thank them enough. Virtual hugs to all of you GEMS! I truly value each one of you!!!
Obviously, this strategy isn't something that I found overnight. I have had my share of challenging times from where I learnt what I shared above. But that is for another time.
