It doesn’t involve...

Being a line manager ie allocating work, having conversations with partners or reviewing work

Techniques

Get out of the office to make it clear its not a standard work conversation
Don’t combine the career coach conversation with operational catch ups
Ask open questions and summarise back what you’ve heard
Don’t feel like you always have to propose a solution, sometimes listening is just as good
