The Names of God

In the old Middle East names were much more than what we regard them as today. Names were given as an expectation, a tasks or to commemorate an event. It often changed after momentous.
Jesus was given his name (Saviour) because of what He would do, the disciple Simon was renamed Peter after his confession that Jesus was Lord.
There is also a number of instructions in the Bible regarding his Name
It should not be taken in vain,
It should be Hallowed and praised

God is a personal God, he has called us by the name, should we not do the same to him? God does not want to be an abstract, academic “it”. He makes himself known to us, also through His names in the Bible. Because of God’s immenseness, no one name can describe Him. But the various names highlights certain aspects of his Being. (Same as God’s gender!! He is not a human or an animal that he has a gender, but he was given the male gender to explain certain his protecting nature and abilities.)

Lord, Jehovah
This is the proper name of God, and according to Jewish tradition, too holy to voice. It is traditionally written YHWH. Often pronounced Yahweh or Jehova. Jews often replaced the word with Adonai when reading out loud. It is derived from the Jewish word Havah, meaning to be or to exist. It is the name that God gave to Moses at the burning bush - I am what I am. Or also I become what I become. Ancient Hebrew only had two tenses - current and future.
