Assessment Overview
The TCDA SPI Assessment is a comprehensive and rigorous 2-day evaluation designed to confirm your readiness and proficiency in instructing single-pitch rock climbing. This is a pass/fail examination where you will demonstrate your mastery of technical skills, instructional abilities, and sound risk management strategies in a practical, real-world climbing environment.
Successful completion of this assessment is the final and crucial step towards earning your official TCDA Single Pitch Instructor certification, recognized for its commitment to high standards and safety.
Over the two intensive days, you will be evaluated on your ability to:
Risk Management & Problem Solving:
Identify and mitigate potential hazards in a single-pitch environment.
Implement robust safety protocols throughout all climbing activities.
Respond effectively to common climbing scenarios and demonstrate basic assistance skills (e.g., lowering an incapacitated climber, basic knot passes).
Technical Proficiency:
Construct secure and efficient top-rope and lead-belay anchors in various settings.
Execute correct belay systems (top-rope, lead belay, and lower).
Perform effective rappelling and assisting skill techniques.
Demonstrate proficiency in essential knots and hitches.
Movement skills
Climb with confidence, demonstrating strong technique and good decision-making.
Maintain a solid level of fitness so they can complete all the day’s objectives with energy and enthusiasm
Professionalism:
Exhibit professional conduct, communication, and leadership throughout the assessment.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of instructor ethics and client care.
Instruction techniques:
Clearly and concisely teach climbing techniques to mock students.
Manage a group effectively at a climbing site, ensuring safety and a positive learning environment.
Provide constructive feedback and adapt your teaching style to different learners.
Organize and manage a climbing site efficiently.
Prerequisites for Assessment
To be eligible for the TCDA SPI Assessment, you must meet the following requirements:
SPI Course Completion: Completed a TCDA SPI Course (or an equivalent, recognized Single Pitch Instructor training program) within the last three years. Please see:
Experience Consolidation: Have experience post-SPI-course climbing at least 20 new lead rock climbing routes, graded at 6A or higher, including 5 new routes.
6B Lead Climb Experience: Can confidently and comfortably lead 6B routes. (Movement skills will be scored in the assessment.)
Equipment: Possess and be proficient with all required climbing equipment (please see the SPI Handbook for the list).
Please note: Meeting these prerequisites is essential for your success in the assessment. The assessment is designed to evaluate your ability to apply learned skills, not to teach new ones.

TCDA Professional Instructor membership requirement
Once the candidate passed the SPI Assessment (the result will be shared via email), he/she needs to apply for the TCDA Professional Instructor membership before receiving the TCDA SPI certificate.
