Session 4: Difficult Passages

Exercises

Drill difficult passages. If you found reading the passage to be difficult, go back and break down the difficult parts the way that we discussed in class– focusing on clause construction (Subject-verb- object/adverb/adjective/etc.) to get the most important details of a sentence. Use those to make condensed summaries that you can keep track of over the course of the passage. Don’t skim over this part; treat this like you would reviewing a difficult logic game.
If you thought the passage was difficult because of the questions, go back and make sure you read the article correctly. Investigate what part of the argument that question was referring to. Always think about what the test makers are trying to test you on– they are not asking random questions!
Other drills that can help: low res drill, memory drill, challenge RC drill, content drill (if you have particular difficulty with a certain topic). See below for drill bank.
Start doing more timed drills with easier passages so that you get a rhythm with full sections
Do a mix of timed and untimed practice with difficult RC passages, but try to only focus on timed drilling with easier passages.
