community architect (professional) @ inventor's residency of san francisco

what is the residency?

the residency is on a mission to create a new version of the college experience that provides ambitious, young builders with the connections, the space, and the mindset needed to positively impact the world.
the current college experience is expensive; it limits exploration; it weakens intrinsic motivation; it rarely teaches practical skills; ~25% of its students are depressed.
because universities, governments, and accreditation organizations need to coordinate to change the college experience, and because each of these institutions are bureaucratic themselves, it is hard to change the college experience from within any of them.
so we are creating our own, specifically for the most ambitious, smart, and considerate youth we can find.
at The Residency, we provide housing, co-working space, coaching, mentorship, speaker events, dinners, and more. we help residents grow personally and professionally, helping them raise millions of dollars. we create an environment that fosters life long friendships. we push residents to the frontier of knowledge and innovation. we enable them to create an even more wonderful world for us all.
we are currently running residencies in san francisco, ca; berkeley, ca; new york city, ny; cambridge, ma; berlin, germany; bangalore, india; vancouver, canada.
we envision residencies all around the world, inspiring and supporting ambitious individuals who wants to level up their lives, and the lives of others 🫶

your role and impact

community architects are the foundation for the residency experience. they live and work alongside residents, being their leader that keeps operations running and communities thriving.
as a community architect, you’ll have 1-1 conversations with residents about life, you’ll plan fireside chats and dinners with successful founders and VCs, and you’ll make sure living in your home is the most productive and inspiring time of people’s lives.
and embody the mindset community architects should posses.
harry nyquist worked at the infamous bell labs. at bell labs, the top patent filers had one thing in common: they regularly had meals with harry. harry was an inquisitive and kind person who made people feel heard. he was able to get people thinking, drawing out their creative energy.
rick rubin, author of “the creative act” and a music production genius, is known for enhancing the innate talent of the artists he works with. he does not impose his vision, he intuitively listens. he experiments, he helps create.
not many people are as intuitive, curious, and empathetic as harry and rick. it is this rare breed of human we are looking for as a community architect for the residency.

key responsibilities as community architect (professional)

weekly syncs: run weekly syncs for both you and residents to showcase progress on work and highlight blockers the community might be able to help with.
1-1’s: hold regular 1-1 conversations with each resident to support their personal growth, professional goals, and emotional well-being. these chats are a space to listen, nudge, and help them course-correct when needed.
demo day: organize and prepare residents for demo day, helping them frame their work, practice pitches, and connect with investors or supporters. you make sure the best of their work shines.
fireside chats: curate and host conversations with exceptional guests: founders, researchers, investors. anyone who embodies the values of the residency.
connections: actively connect residents to mentors, experts, investors, and peers who can accelerate their journey. you are the bridge between their potential and the people who can unlock it.

who you are

curious and knowledgeable: your mind is bustling with ideas and questions. you are driven by an innate curiosity across many domains.
authentic and open: you're unafraid to be yourself, you are okay admitting when you don't have the answers.
responsive and organized: you have got your sh** together.
bonus points:
you like to tell stories (enjoying writing, photography, or videography to convey beauty)
you are a social butterfly, a super connector
you like improving spaces (think interior design, installing new lights, sound systems, etc)

perks of being a community architect

societal impact: you are like the residents: building something ambitious. you yourself are part of the next generation of innovators. you will be living and working alongside others just like you. in your position, you are instrumental to crafting the perfect environment that enables yourself and your fellow residents to make history!
network expansion: this role requires you to meet many new people. think founders and researchers who have knowledge and experiences to share with residents. think investors and companies who can provide valuable resources to residents. we organize events with all of them and you will be their primary contact! Sam Altman recently, just to give you some sense of the caliber of people you could meet.
skill development: in this role you will learn what it is like to lead people to action by putting the right “pressures”/incentives in place and saying the right things in order to motivate residents to action. you will learn to build a thriving community that handles conflict. and you will learn to connect deeply with new people.

disclaimer

we do not expect anyone to perfectly match all of the descriptions listed above, nor do we want them to! we expect each Community Architect to bring their unique self to the role, using their uniqueness to give their cohort a special experience.
this isn't a typical “job”; it's the start of a journey. some of you will end up starting a company with a resident or starting one of your own. some of you will end up working with a VC or with a company that we host events with. some of you might continue to be a community architect, helping bring a collaborative and creative culture to the rest of the world! whatever your path, we are excited to help you navigate it.
