Our team members have trained health care providers in mhGAP in several countries including French-speaking Africa. We have adapted the mhGAP training modules to different settings (refugee camps, local health system, virtual clinics). Our research team members and partners are experienced in adapting, translating and administering mhGAP and other mental health surveys, and have collected mental health data through fieldwork in several countries across the African continent. Our proposed work will build on this experience as well as the experience of local health practitioners and researchers. Our team members have collaborated on a research project in Nigeria, adapteing mhGAP for training primary care providers using a task-shifting and train the trainer model. The program completed adaptation of the mhGAP for the Nigerian health system. The project developed proof of concept for their model with feasibility of using mhGAP for perinatal depression. We will build on the Nigerian model in our work Mali and the DRC.
We will make use of existing country-level data to situate our research, data collection, and analyses.
