The Walker's Walks

What’s This Lil’ Thing?

This is a non-exhaustive* archival of all the planned walks and the associated projects (writer, author, certified non-nudnik) over the years-2025 that’s been covered on his and newsletters, and . He’s done multiple “” over the years that runs only for the duration of his planned walks or trips. These pop-ups then serve as the material and backbone for his books—books that are born from looking closely on a subject like the in Japan.
Why focus on his walks then, instead of his writing? Largely because of the fact that most of his writing is about walking (the ridgeline newsletter is largely about walking), and he was written extensively, multiple times, about how much for all of his creative endeavors.
To understand more about the idea of walking supporting creativity, see . You can see all of the projects the walking has enabled
.
The lengthy duration of his walk and the fact that his writing is public-facing meant he has answered the question of “how do I walk for such long periods” several times, which is .

*Few Caveats

Non-exhaustive purely because I’m sure there are far more short one-day or private walks that are not written about. Dates (and thus duration) and distances are not always one-hundo-percent accurate, as it is based on publicly available information. This will be noted, and references to dates/length is linked for access!

Walks in Cards

All cards with blue fonts have an associated project, although only ones with a blue background has a project that is not the Walk and Talk. Both ‘duration‘ and ‘length (km)’ value is colored on a color scale, from orange to green, based on how short it is comparatively (orange) to how long it is comparatively (green).
Unsurprisingly, generally the longer the amount of days the longer the length of the path walked. You can see below how well this correlates. However, there’s two interesting exceptions to this: slower photography-focused walks and the faster second Tōkaidō walk.
For the photography-focused walks (’Ten Great, Strange, Mid-sized Cities in Japan’ and Kii Peninsula, The Return), the intention was to capture the essence of the path, cities, and people. Walking became a secondary vehicle to this goal. The second Tōkaidō walk was just intended to go much faster than the usual pace of (XX km/day on average), covering 37.5km per day instead.

Stats!

Are walks mostly with people or solo?
Craig has said before that his creative endeavor is supported only be solo walks, as it is the only way to pay attention to to have with you.
Sure enough, most of his walks are solo!
How many projects were born out of these walks?
The interesting correlation between the output and the walks is the fact that the big walks (
@Nakasendō
and
@Kii Peninsula
), all of which he took on solo, are the ones that help generate the most projects.
How long are these walks??
This graph on show the magnitude of the walks. All of the walks above 300km are done solo.
