What is Good Authority?

Good Authority is a book by Jonathan Raymond that provides a new perspective on leadership and management. It introduces the concept of the Accountability Dial, a step-by-step approach to having difficult conversations at work. The book aims to help leaders become more effective by focusing on personal growth, fostering a culture of accountability, and improving their ability to engage and develop their teams. It's a guide to becoming a more empathetic and effective leader.

What is The Accountability Dial®?

The Accountability Dial® is a tool designed to help you navigate conversations at work, particularly those that involve feedback or addressing challenging behaviors. It's not a map with specific instructions, but more like a compass guiding you through the dialogue. It consists of five steps:
The Mention: This is where you notice and name a behavior or ask a question about something you’re observing for the first time.
The Invitation: At this stage, you're naming what seems to be a pattern of behavior from your perspective.
The Conversation: Here, the focus shifts from intent to the actual impact of the behavior.
The Boundary: This involves creating an agreement for the next step of behavior change to help the person take full ownership.
The Limit: This is the point where you express that you feel you’ve given all the help or feedback you have and are leaving the accountability fully with them.
It's designed to create a shared language for feedback and to get ahead of the subtle things that can demoralize and disengage people in a work culture. It's not a performance management tool, but rather a way to improve communication and accountability within a team.
