Background

If you’re regularly emailing through Gmail, like I am, it’s helpful to keep your HRM in close sync with your Google Contacts. Doing so is pretty easy. When you follow the instructions below, the

People⁠

table remains the source of truth for people, but you can easily match what’s in the

People⁠

table with the corresponding contact in Google Contacts. And if you’re adding someone new, who isn’t in Google Contacts, then you can simply click a button in the HRM to create a new Google Contact, given the first name, last name, and email of the person.

Step 1: Sync your Google Contacts.

The first step is to sync your Google Contacts into this doc. You should have been prompted to connect to Google when you first copied the doc. If you missed it, you can also manually connect to Google by clicking Insert → Packs → Google Contacts and adding your email as a shared account. Repeat for Gmail and Google Calendar.

You’ll know you successfully connected with Google Contacts when you see your own contacts in the table below. If you need help with this step, the Coda team can help. Just click the question mark at the bottom right of the screen.

Step 2: Unhide columns.

You’ll want to unhide two columns in the

People⁠

that connect this doc with your Google Contacts: Add to Google Contacts (button) and Google Contact (lookup select list).

I’ve unhidden those columns below in Step 3, but you can unhide them on any view of the

People⁠

in this doc. If you use the Google Contacts pack often, consider showing them in

Add Someone⁠

or other frequently-used pages.

Step 3: Match people with Google Contacts.

Now you can match up people in the

People⁠

table with your Google Contacts, and create new Google Contacts when they don’t yet exist. Here’s a view of the people table below to illustrate how that works:
