Chapter: 01. Introduction To Chemistry

Science: The systematic knowledge gained by humans through observations and experimentation.
Scientist: A person who has a vast knowledge of Science and is engaged in scientific research.
Chemistry: A branch of Science that deals with the study of the composition and the physical and chemical properties of various forms of matter.
Matter: All the substances that things around us are made up of.
Alchemy: An ancient practice that was both scientific and spiritual, playing an important role in the development of Chemistry.
Alchemists: People who used to practice alchemy, studying the nature of substances and making useful compounds.
Philosopher’s stone: A magical substance alchemists sought, believed to turn metals to gold and extend lifespan/grant immortality.
Fertilisers: Chemicals that provide nutrients to crops and help to increase agricultural production.
Pesticides: Chemicals used to kill pests that harm crops and reduce the yield.
Insecticides: Chemicals used to kill insects that infest crops.
Fungicides: Chemicals used to protect crops from fungi.
Food processing: The process of combining raw food ingredients by physical and chemical methods into marketable food products.
Food preservation: The process of treating food with certain chemicals to prevent the growth of micro-organisms and spoilage of food.
Preservatives: Chemicals used for food preservation to prevent the growth of micro-organisms and spoilage.
Medicines (Drugs): Chemical substances that are used to treat diseases and save lives.
Analgesic: A type of medicine used to reduce body pain.
Antipyretic: A type of medicine used to reduce body temperature.
Antibiotic: A type of medicine used to fight bacterial infections.
Antacid: A type of medicine used to reduce the excessive acid in the stomach.
Cosmetics: Products used to clean, protect and enhance the external appearance of the human body.
Talcum powder: A soft white powder made from talc or magnesium silicate, used as a cosmetic.
Fuels: Substances that produce a large amount of heat energy on combustion, used to power transport.
Hydrochloric acid: An acid present in the stomach that helps in the digestion of food.
Enzymes: Chemical substances secreted in the body that help to carry out various chemical reactions.
Hormones: Chemical substances that control various activities in the body.
