Chapter: 01. Maps And Diagrams

A plan is useful because it tells us exactly where things are on the ground due to being drawn to scale.
A distributary is a separate river channel created when a river splits, but which does not rejoin the main channel, typically found in a delta region.
Block mountains are formed when cracks or faults occur in the Earth’s crust, causing the land surface between these cracks to sink, leaving upstanding blocks on either side.
The index in an atlas contains the names of all important places along with their respective latitudes and longitudes.
A map is a two-dimensional representation, while a globe is a three-dimensional representation of the Earth.
The Survey of India (SOI) is the national survey and mapping organization of India.
A plan is drawn to scale, providing accurate distances and showing more details, making it easy for all to understand, unlike a sketch which is rough and lacks detail.
A sketch is not accurate in showing the true shape or size of features because it is not drawn to scale, meaning distances are not proportionally represented.
A fold is formed when the layers of the Earth’s crust are bent by compression.
Topographical maps provide detailed information about local landforms, streams, rivers, canals, roads, buildings, structures, and railway tracks in smaller areas.
Sketches are usually used to show people how to go from one place to another.
Maps show selected features and are not usually congested, which makes it easier for people to understand and interpret the information they are representing.
Different signs, symbols, and colors are used on maps to provide distinct information in a clear and concise manner, minimizing misinterpretation.
A large-scale map shows smaller areas in a bigger space, allowing for detailed information about features, whereas a small-scale map shows a large land area in a small space with less visible detail.
A river is a stream of water which flows in a channel from high ground to low ground and ultimately flows into a lake or sea.
Students and teachers gain knowledge and accurate information about places from maps.
