Section D: Short Answer Questions

The purpose of a map scale is to show the relationship between the distance measured on the map and the actual distance on the ground. Two ways it can be represented are by a verbal/statement scale (e.g., “1 cm = 5 km”) and a graphical/linear scale (a drawn bar with segments representing distances).
Conventional signs and symbols are important on maps because they are internationally recognized representations of features like roads, buildings, and rivers. This standardization allows anyone familiar with these symbols, regardless of language, to understand and interpret maps from different regions or countries.
The Equator is significant because it is the 0° latitude, the longest line of latitude, and a Great Circle that divides the Earth into two equal halves: the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. It serves as a fundamental reference point for measuring distances north or south on Earth.

Section E: Diagram-Based Question

The Equator (0° latitude) divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
The special name given to the 0° vertical line shown in the diagram is the Prime Meridian.
The grid of lines (latitudes and longitudes) helps us find places on a map by providing a unique set of coordinates for every location. The intersection of a specific latitude and longitude pinpoint the exact position of a place, allowing for precise identification.

Section F: Long Answer Question

A map’s legend or key is crucial because it serves as a guide that decodes all the signs, symbols, and colours used on the map, making it understandable. Without it, the map would be a collection of meaningless marks. Colours are important elements on physical maps as they are conventionally used to represent different geographical features. For example, light blue typically shows water bodies, dark green indicates natural vegetation, and orange signifies highlands, making the map visually intuitive and easy to interpret the terrain and land use at a glance.
