Hot dogs, sausages & Italian beef

Can't get more Chicago than any of these things

Chicago-style hot dog

Let’s address this first. I’m not an expert, so here’s some literature, and I’ll leave it at that.
TLDR: no ketchup.

Polish sausage

Chicagoans enjoy non-hot dog sausages as well, including the beloved Polish sausage.

Italian beef

Now this area I can really shed some light on. Italian beef sandwiches are Chicago’s version of cheesesteaks — minus the cheese & plus a lot of wetness. In my opinion, the only way to order them is “dipped”, that means “dip it into the wet delicious gravy”, and it comes out soggy and delicious. Try it, I’m not wrong.

Giardiniera

It has come to my attention that not everyone is aware of this fine condiment. Well, ask for hot peppers with your italian beef and you’ll probably end up getting some version of giardiniera. Enjoy.

My favorite Italian beef is
@Johnnie’s Beef
, but there are many many strong contenders. A local chain that never disappoints is Portillo’s. While you’re at it with your Italian beef, grab a chocolate cake shake. Yes, it’s a piece of chocolate cake mushed into a milkshake. And it’s very good. Trust.
