Local Yelp (Tabelog / OpenRice)
1
Godaime Hanayama Udon Nihonbashi
One of the best chain udons IMO — Price is reasonable, food quality is great.
Medium line — This location in Nihonbashi is relatively shorter, and go later at night (Nihonbashi is a business district, so if you go after 7:30/8pm, the line is usually shorter.)
1
Tendon - Kaneko Hannosuke
Long line — Expect your clothes to smell afterwards
Great value (Lots of food, reasonably priced)
4
Chūka Soba Ginza Hachigo
One of the top 2 ramen spots IMO
Make sure you book online (Reservation opens a week ahead of time. Make sure you are in front of your computer & click) — Otherwise, you can try your luck on lining up.
Iruca Tokyo Roppongi
One of the top 2 ramen spots IMO
No reservation — Line up at 10:30am and wait.
NIPPON RAMEN RIN TOKYO Gransta Tokyo Shop
Ramen shop inside the Tokyo station.
While not the best, it’s a very very solid ramen, and I always stop by as my last lunch in Japan before going to the airport.
Men-ya Inoichi
Best ramen in Kyoto based on the shops I went to (Though the Tokyo ones are better IMO) → Still worth going.
Expect a line.
1
Torikizoku (Hibiya)
You can book online and have a good enough experience for Yakitori. No wait.
Everything is ~300 Yen (Including drinks).
3
Ben Fiddich
Famed cocktail spot
Dark Side
Fancy bar in TST ($25 per drink)
Ask for their seasonal menu / rotation
Dio Cafe & Bar
Specialize in integrating local flavors into cocktails
1
Kaitenzushi Nemuro Hanamaru Ginza
Great value — Reasonably priced, above average sushis (Better than the general Tsukiji vendors IMO)
Long line — Go line up at the mall entrance at 10:30am, take the elevator at 11am and run to the store to get first steaing.
2
Kai Issyou
Uni omakase — One of the best experiences I’ve had in my life.
Add their sake pairing.
Very pricy, but IMO very good value for what you get.
Tsuikiji Unitora Nakadori
Uni bowl — Pricy, IMO Kai Issou is better in terms of value but you are guaranteed to have a bowl of uni (Kai Issyou is not always opened.)
1
Taimeiken
This is the place that made the watery Omurice famous in Japan.
Reasonably price + their omurice is solid (Other dishes — Not so much.)
2
Tonkatsu Hajime Nihonbashi
Go early — They may run out of options if you go later.
Great value
Long line
Tonkatsu Aoki Ginza
Go early to get first seating.
Great value
1
Gyu-nabe Yonekyu
Great value
Go early to avoid wait
Staff can be rude to tourists.
1
Junsei
Unique tofu experience
Must visit if this is your first time in Kyoto
Reservation accepted
2
Hikiniku to Come
Unique experience of hamburger steak in Japan that I feel it makes sense to try once while in Japan
This is a chain — Comparing to the store in Tokyo, this has wayyy less crowd.
They pass out slots early in the morning — You can come by in the morning, pick a slot, go about your day and come back for food later in the afternoon/evening. (Read Google review/their website for detailed instructions.)
Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu - Pnoto-cho Main Ship
Grilled steak, Japanese style.
Everything is average — Except there’s no line. Recommend this spot because it’s easy to grab food in case everywhere else in the city is flooded with tourists.
1
Sun King Yuen Curry Restaurant
Extreme local spot.
The line is long — Go on a weekday, and make sure you arrive at least 30 minutes before opening.
Order their curry pork chop rice.
