Meeting notes

Ciara 19/10/2023

Agenda
Project update
Overall structure
removed idea of consultation (too ambitious).
Starting to build the Merry-Go-Round narrative as a scene using the linear narrative structure of the Merry-Go-Round video (I think this works well)
Scene will have a narrator voiceover that explains the concepts and be backed up by athlete stories (same as Merry-Go-Round video). Athlete stories will be triggered by different interactions that either help connect user to athlete or reinforce a point in their story.
As you suggested it being dialogical was important, at the end of the scene considering having the narrator directly ask the user questions relating to the scene. The user can respond via voice (or touch if multiple choice). Don’t want to build a chatbot so unlikely to do anything with the answers other than maybe visually displaying them
Will figure out experience intro/outro after having built the Merry-Go-Round
Merry-Go-Round scene development
Tried dropping in the Merry-Go-Round video’s audio in a (very basic) VR scene to get a feel for how the narrative structure in VR and adding in interactions. In the scene he narrator voiceover autoplays for a section, then a 3D box appears that when the user touches it plays an athlete story. Cycle repeats for scene:
Have a plan to user test this:
Sketching out different interactions for triggering the athlete stories
Still unsure how it will visually look - hopefully this will come out of the sketches
Questions
In the Merry-Go-Round, we are looking at making the narrator voiceover more concise (keep users attention), remove direct references to the research (e.g. “athletes reported a lack...”) and directly address the user (increase feeling of presence). Rebecca has done this on
Broken link
, sections highlighted in orange. Do you have any concerns about these or feel they miss key points?
In the Merry-Go-Round, we are thing of ending the scene with the narrator directly ask the user questions relating to the scene. Do you have questions you have found useful in getting athletes to reflect on the narrative and their own experiences? Or suggestions for questions we could ask here?
Do you have original audio of the athlete stories? I would like to use these directly in the experience as I think they are powerful and have a good range of different voices. Currently I have just clipped the audio from a YouTube video which has background music.

6 months to do first Merry-go-round
They found it can be too much present all 6 narratives, so sometimes present resilience, merry-go-round, longevity
