Zawiyah is a space for inner retreat, an opportunity to deepen our relationship with our Lord and move in closer proximity to Allah. In zawiyah we practice being the corpse in the hands of the washer; where Allah is the Washer, the Mover!
We support our proximity to Allah with the practice of of our beloved guide, Sidi Shaykh Muhammad Al-Jamal, reflecting on his teachings and sitting in remembrance with The One. The zawiyah retreat helps to cleanse and purify our heart so we may come to more deeply know the Divine Light that was breathed into our heart, inshAllah. Each day we offer two group check-ins with your zawiyah teacher. Your teachers are available throughout your stay if you have questions, concerns, or need support.
Disconnect to connect. To fully immerse yourself in the remembrance of Allah, we discourage the use of cell phones and computers during your retreat.
The Zawiyah Experience
The Arabic word “zawiyah” means “corner, nook”; this reflects the intention to be in the corner with The One. The cornerstone of this program is to support your heart’s turning to Allah. In this turning, you may encounter veils of otherness that long to be lifted and their paradoxical resistance to be unveiled. As Allah calls your heart to His Embrace, you may experience moments of constriction and expansion; allow your heart to move from state to state in its path to find its true station.
Our Sufi path invites us to prefer the company of pious people over seclusion, and seclusion over the company of idle talk. Our group setting will offer you the opportunity to taste this distinction. Remember, you are here to practice being with Allah in every corner; whether alone or with others - be mindful of your conversations and interactions both in the inner and the outer.
One of the jewels of this retreat is the opportunity to pray together. The five prayers will take place in the dome room, when you hear the adhan take your chance and increase your blessings by praying with the congregation!
Alhamdulillah, anything and everything that happens during your time in zawiyah, is grist for the mill of your walking. As Sidi says, don't stop with any pictures! Ya Karim!
