Factor for lumen:
Light properities
material abledo/base color/roughness
Exposure
Show the lumen light effected scene on the screen (calculate using low quality setting):
show → Visualize → Lumen Scene
Change UE4 project to Lumen
Project Setting → type:
global illumination, choose Lumen;
Reflection method, choose Lumen
Software Ray Tracing, tick generate mesh distance field
Optional but as optimzal lumen setting:
still in Project Setting
→
Engine-Rendering:
Lumen: tick Use Hardware Ray Tracing when available
Hardware Ray Tracing, tick support and shadow
Platforms - Windows:
Default RHI: DirectX12
In the scene setup:
main sources: Skylight and directional light
→ Details: Indirect lighting intensity (set as 0 means no GI)
In Post process volume, Details → Global Illumination or Reflections → both Method: choose Lumen
Lumen Reflection Quality set as 4 (when using both lumen and hardware ray tracing)
Lumen limitation and solution:
1.Mobility has to set as Movable (static won’t work on lumen)
2.Foliage/thin shape mesh not work well (don’t convert to nanite may solve the problem)
3. Shadow may too shape and with noise
For noise problem, type the following in command in content browser, set value as 8:
For shape shadow problem, type and value as 8 too:
Further improvement is to make the light source smaller
Reminder: if a place put in a HDRI dome, the light maybe blocked and the place look fully dark (so disable the dome if just need to show the inner place)
4.No Landscape support, no Trasnsluency support
5.No lighting channels
When rendering in movie render queue:
Setting: Render warm up frame increase to 250-500 F (to offset initial noisy and messed up frames, coz lumen is mainly for live time rendering)
Best Practices with Lumen:
-Don’t replace actual light with emissive materials (i.e. don’t just rely on emissive material to light up the scene)
Keep emissive objects large and dim (to reduce noise)
-Avoid base colors with value 1 (pure white, 100% reflection of light. In real world nothing will not absorb any light)
-Use the lumen scene visualization mode
-Materials can cause objects to show up black in lumen scene (by default, megascan transmission master material is used which will break lumen when download in quxiel bridge)
-An interior scene is better splited each element individually (wall, floor, ceiling...) Lumen only work well in simple interior room setup
Beginner lumen light setting tips:
Skylight:
Tick Real time Capture (to matach color temperature in differnet time)
Emissive material nodes:
