Week 3: January 26th - January 31st

AT 219 Autonomous Aircraft Technology and Maintenance 2

In AT 219, we read and discussed two articles.
In the lecture, we continued discussing weather and UAS. We discussed gaps in UAS weather, weather tools, UAS and weather challenges, T-storm outflow, microburst, and more. In the lab, we began correcting the issues identified on our punch list and continued to assemble the Believer. In addition, we also completed an assignment on the SeligSIM. The assignment was to watch the tutorial videos to understand how the control system works.

AT 319 Unmanned Aerial Systems Applications, Data, and Documentation

In AT 319, we had a lecture on georeferencing and its importance to the UAS industry. To test our skills, we had an assignment on georeferencing. I used a reference layer of Fort Douaumont, France to georeference another layer. Below is the final product.
In our lab, we did the second part of digitizing. We created a topology for three different layers of a lake in Northern Minnesota. The layers included lakes, uplands, and aquatic vegetation. We learned how to create rules to enforce certain conditions. We learned how to correct errors presented after the rules are added, new techniques like cross-hatch and transparent fills, and learned how to trace existing edges.

AFT 361 Leading People and Effective Communication

In AFT 361, we had a lecture on our future assignments, which are two briefings. One is an informal briefing on any topic we choose, and the other is an advocacy briefing on an assignment topic related to the Air Force. We were given the grading rubric, how it should be formatted, resources to use, and when we are presenting. We also talked about how to view our orders, which we will receive after graduating, assignments, and potential programs after commissioning. In our other lecture, we talked about climate and culture and how we can influence it. We discussed the differences between the two, the climate and culture at our own detachment, and read questions that help determine the culture or climate of a unit.

AT 381 Aviation Security

In AT 381, we had an overview of aviation security. We discussed the national aviation system’s structure and economic importance. We identified key components in security at airports, airlines, and regulators. We talked about the fundamental lessons from the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Finally, we analyzed how fragile the system is and yet, how resilient it is.

Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps

Due to the extreme weather, our Physical Training was cancelled. Instead, we had self report, which meant we needed to show proof of 60 minutes of exercise. This week, I was assigned Cadet Flight Commander, which is the position that is in charge of the flight, which consists of 14 cadets. The Cadet Flight Commander is in charge of preparing the flight for the upcoming week, making sure the flight meets deadlines assigned by their Flight Commanders, communicating with the flight, and leading at the Leadership Laboratory. This week, the flight needed to submit their goals, course of action if goals were not met, positive and negatives from the positions the week prior, flight meeting, and quiz corrections.

Research Assistant

I am a research assistant for an FAA Workforce Development Grant. During this week, I attended our weekly meeting, where we discussed weekly goals and what needs to be completed in the coming weeks. I talked with the participating schools about a potential flight demo for students.

Flight Training

I had two flights scheduled for this week. We planned to fly to a non-towered airport and practice pattern work. My first flight was cancelled due to the wind, and during the preflight of my second flight, the air filter in the engine caught on fire, and we were not allowed to fly. My instructor and I overprimed the engine, which caused a spark to ignite, leading to the air filter catching fire. Maintenance was able to put the fire out quickly, replace the filter, and the plane was safe to fly shortly after. Instead of flying this week, my instructor and I had a ground lesson on maneuvers we will practice in the future and what I will be tested on for my checkride.
