Week 2: January 19th - January 24th

AT 219 Autonomous Aircraft Technology and Maintenance 2

In AT 219, we read and discussed two articles.
In addition to the articles, we discussed how weather affects Unmanned Aerial Systems and looked at reliable weather sources to use in the future. In the lab, we worked to download the Selig simulator, The purpose of using this online simulator is to get hours and practice flying a fixed-wing UAS system, in preparation for flying the Believer drone. Below is a link to a video from the Selig simulator.

AT 319 Unmanned Aerial Systems Applications, Data, and Documentation

In AT 319, we discussed Data Representation, Data Entry and Editing, and background theories for incorporating UAS data into Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Furthermore, we discussed digitizing and how it has improved over the years. In the lab, we used the software, ArcGIS Pro, to get practice digitizing, basic techniques, and learned skills for editing, such as splitting, merging, and auto-complete digitizing. Below is a photo from my first digitized map on ArcGIS Pro.

AFT 361 Leading People and Effective Communication

In AFT 361, we had two lectures. In these lectures, we discussed the Enlisted Force and the Total Force of the Air Force. As future officers in the Air Force, it is important to know how the Enlisted Force functions to build trust, boost morale, and ensure mission readiness. The Total Force includes Active Duty, Reserve, Guard, and civilian personnel. Officers must know and understand the structure so they can build strong and adaptable units that maximize available personnel and expertise.

AT 381 Aviation Security

In AT 381, we were split into groups and given a specific incident in aviation security. In our group, we were to research the incident and present a 5-minute presentation. My group was assigned Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 1771. After researching this incident, the main takeaways and learning outcomes were to increase security for aviation personnel, more specifically employee badges, improve cockpit security, and address insider threats. Other groups presented on incidents such as Pan AM Flight 103, FedEx Flight 705, the September 11 Attacks, and Northwest Flight 253.

Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps

This was our first official week in ROTC after winter break. We had Physical Training this week that was an entire body-focused workout. I also attended Supplemental Instruction (SI), which is meant to prepare cadets for the Leadership Laboratory (LLAB) this week. At SI, we reviewed academics and Open Rank Inspection procedures. In addition, we had flight meetings, where our individual flight prepared for LLAB. At LLAB, we did in-processing, Open Rank Inspections, Flight Drill Evaluations, took a quiz, and reviewed new academic material for the upcoming week.

Research Assistant

I am a research assistant for an FAA Workforce Development Grant. During this week, I attended our weekly meeting, where we discussed weekly goals and what needs to be completed in the coming weeks.

Flight Training

I am the recipient of the You Can Fly Scholarship, which is a scholarship of $5,000 that is given to cadets to put towards ground school, receive flight lessons, and build up flight hours. I am using the scholarship to get flight lessons and build up my flight hours in preparation for the PCSM, or Pilot Candidate Selection Method. This week I had two flight lessons where I practiced pattern work and my landings.
