Nurturing Future Leaders in Neuromodulation

Welcome to the Physician's Neuromodulation Mentorship Program!
Your expertise and guidance will be instrumental in shaping the future leaders of the field.
This guide will help you make the most of your mentorship role.

Section 1: Setting the Foundation

1.1 Understand Your Mentee:
Take the time to understand your mentee's background, goals, and expectations.
Tailor your guidance to their unique needs and aspirations.
1.2 Establish Expectations:
Clearly communicate what you can offer as a mentor.
Set boundaries and expectations for communication and meetings.
During your first meeting, we encourage slating a monthly check-in meeting on your calendars to ensure one touchpoint. This can always be rescheduled or cancelled and more sessions can be added later, but proactive scheduling has proven to be the most fruitful for mentor/mentee pairs in the program.

Section 2: Nurture Growth

2.1 Goal-Oriented Approach:
Collaborate with your mentee to set clear, achievable goals. Your mentee should document them during the first meeting and share them with you.
Develop a roadmap to track their progress over time. The INS will check in periodically to ensure we are offering
2.2 Encourage Exploration:
Promote curiosity and a desire for lifelong learning and development.
Suggest resources, courses, and opportunities for skill development.
If opportunities for site visits exist, this can be an exceptional way to expand your mentee’s exposure.
2.3 Provide Constructive Feedback:
Offer feedback that is specific, actionable, and supportive.
Encourage a growth mindset and resilience in the face of challenges.

Section 3: Building Trust and Communication

3.1 Maintain Regular Contact:
While we encourage mentees to be the primary facilitator for booking meetings, mentors who reciprocally initiate communication and set the pace for meetings often facilitate a more meaningful connection.
Foster an environment where your mentee feels comfortable reaching out.
3.2 Active Listening:
Listen attentively to your mentee's concerns, questions, and achievements.
Show empathy and understanding in your interactions.
3.3 Share Your Experiences:
Relate personal experiences and insights to help your mentee navigate their career.
Offer anecdotes that illustrate valuable lessons.
3.4 Encourage Reverse Mentorship:
Mentees often have valuable insights to share from experiences within and outside of the field of neuromodulation. Encourage your mentee to share unique experiences that may bring value to your development and support their mentorship skill development so that they are well-equipped to become mentors in the future.

Section 4: Supporting Career Development

4.1 Networking and Connections:
Connect with your mentee on LinkedIn.
Inquire into ways that your network may be of value to your mentee and introduce your mentee to your professional network.
Encourage them to attend industry events and conferences and coordinate time for in-person meeting, if possible.
4.2 Opportunities for Hands-On Experience:
Explore possibilities for mentee involvement in research or clinical work.
Provide guidance on how to maximize the benefits of these opportunities.
If you are able to welcome your mentee for a site visit, many mentees find great appreciation in this opportunity.

Section 5: Celebrate Success and Program Closure

5.1 Recognize Achievements:
Acknowledge your mentee's milestones and accomplishments.
Celebrate their growth and progress together.
5.2 Closure with Gratitude:
As the mentorship comes to an end, express your appreciation for the opportunity to guide and mentor.
Offer continued support even after the formal mentorship concludes if you are comfortable doing so.
