Maximize Your Mentorship Experience

Welcome to the INS Physician's Mentorship Program!
This guide will help you make the most of your mentorship experience and achieve your career goals in neuromodulation.

Section 1: Take Ownership

1.2 Initiating Contact:
Take the initiative to reach out to your mentor initially.
Demonstrate professionalism and respect for their time.
1.1 Define Your Goals:
Clearly outline your career aspirations and objectives. Use the information from your application to define what you would like to accomplish in 2024 with the support of your mentor.
During your first meeting, share your relevant professional and personal goals and objectives. Align them with your mentor’s experience and collaboratively identify specific, documented goals for your mentorship relationship.
Share your documented goals with your mentor to guide the mentorship.
1.3 Scheduling Meetings:
Proactively schedule regular meetings with your mentor.
Consider booking a standing monthly meeting for the entire year in advance to ensure consistent contact. You can always add, remove, or reschedule sessions. However, proactively slating time facilitates an opportunity to have at least one monthly touchpoint.
Tools like , , or can be helpful if you find it challenging to align schedules.
1.4 On-site Meetings:
Mentors and Mentees often find it rewarding to connect in-person.
During your first meeting, share which industry meetings, conferences, or events you plan to attend and ask the same of your mentor. If there is alignment, slate time on your calendar for an in-person meeting if time allows. If the opportunity presents, take initiative to attend events that your mentor will be at if in-person sessions are desired.
Many mentors and mentees coordinate site visits to deepen the mentorship relationship and support the mentee’s development and exposure in the field. Ask your mentor if this is an option.

Ask open ended questions to find alignment.
3.2 Skill Enhancement:
Seek guidance on improving both clinical and non-clinical skills.
