On Fridays, our all-hands meeting is an opportunity to acknowledge and share the cool things people have achieved this week. This can be anything—shipping a feature or piece of content, squashing a bug, helping a customer, or simply doing something nice for another hatchling.
Giving Kudos
Growing a startup takes a lot of work. So, while we are always better together, it’s also important to put extra effort into celebrating each other’s achievements. When we are trying to hit ambitious targets and key results, it can often make good individual work less visible.
You can give kudos anytime using Slack with the Kudos bot /kudos @person for [reason] .If you can frame kudos to a key result, that would be amazing, but don’t be afraid to give kudos for something less tangible. That’s what Heroic Moments are specifically for.
On Praise
At Hatch we love to point out if your doing things right. In the form of feedback this is specific and intentionally. We go beyond “Thanks for being helpful”.
We do this not only because we want everyone to recognise their accomplishments that go beyond the surface level. Praise doesn’t have to be lengthly or in-person (but it’s great if it is).
Feedback
One of the reasons we give praise is because we also want to build trust with each other. To get to a point where we can provide candid feedback on what we might like done differently.
People don’t want to intentionally not meet standards or perform but sometimes it occurs, we want to get to a point in which this gets noticed not to hurt you as long as your earnestly trying to improve but to make sure you don’t get forgotten and we can work towards success together. (This should always be done synchronously, not via message or text).
