The course intends to improve, extend, expand and systematize the theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the subject area closely related to the topic of Master Thesis in medical engineering.
the Biodesign process is a key through the whole course:
IDENTIFY where the focus is on Needs Finding and Need Validation
INVENT with the focus on Ideation and Brainstorming, Concept Generation, Intellectual Property Basics, Regulatory Basics, Reimbursement Basics, Business Models and Prototyping
IMPLEMENT that dress the development strategy for: IP, R&D, Clinical, Regulatory, Sales
and Integration with the discussion over Operating Plan and Financial Models
As an engineer you need to be able to integrate skills and knowledge from different courses within this programme. It is also expected from you to be able to construct a product or prototype from a given, not completely finished, specification of requirement, both as participant and as a project manager. To manage this you will also need to acquire new information and knowledge, which is a life-long process.
Our point of departure will be practical ethical problems. These will vary each time the course is given but classical examples include conflicts between safety and economy or function, environmental effects of technology, conflicts between the engineer’s professionalism and his/her loyalty to the employer, work with morally dubious technologies, insider problems and industrial espionage, integrity issues related to IT, etc.
The aim of the course is to provide a deeper understanding of the methodological and underlying philosophical issues that arise in science, and inspire to reflection on such issues within the student’s own area of study. After having taken the course the student should have acquired basic knowledge of the foundational issues in the methodology and philosophy of science, specially as regards the natural and technological sciences.
