The Trump Administration will auction off drilling rights for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on January 6th. The area spans 19 million acres in northeastern Alaska and is believed to contain the largest onshore reserves of oil in North America. If it continues, the drilling would cause a huge step backward in securing a green future and would harm vulnerable wildlife, such as polar bears and caribou, and Alaska Native tribes who depend on it. Hence, we must do our part in stopping this wrong before this essential place is destroyed.

The Arctic Refuge has been protected by Congress for 60 years and by Indigenous peoples for millennia before that. The climate impacts of fossil fuel extraction in the Arctic are not worth the risk!
40,000 caribou give birth in the 1002 area of the Arctic Refuge each year. This is a main source of food security for Gwich’in people. Disturbing the birthgrounds of the Porcupine Caribou herd would impact migration routes, population, and health.
This is a sensitive ecosystem that sustains many lives, some endangered because of the climate crisis. We cannot afford to invest in dangerous extraction projects any longer.
This is a human rights issue, food security issue, and climate justice issue.
The climate crisis already endangers this sensitive ecosystem that sustains species in direct threat of extinction. We should be increasing climate solutions not greenhouse gas emissions.
The health impacts and social impacts will negatively affect the Indigenous Peoples of the Arctic both directly and indirectly through food and air quality. The Gwich’in Nation has been advocating for protection of the Arctic for decades. We need to listen to Land Protectors and keep this place protected.
